Houses that I can't get into.

Sometimes I'll come across a house with a bolted door that has a second floor with rooms I can't get to. Are these here for show or will I get into them somehow later? Also, sometimes an npc will be blocking a door that leads to other parts of a building. Crocks house in the swamp is a perfect example.
Is there any way to get into places like that without killing the npc?

Chances are good you'll get into one or both of the bolted houses later on, although it's not technically necessary.

I've never been in Crock's room because I've got a standing policy of never killing merchants (particularly with Crock, since he's the best source of good ammo until you're deep into the game IMO). The only way to get by him would be to kill him.

Thanks once again dteowner. I did kill Crock just out of curiosity to see what was upstairs, but I reloaded my previous save afterwards. I wonder if it would be possible to draw him away from behind the counter by luring monsters into his house?

btw: In case you were wondering, there is only 1 chest upstairs with some average items.

I've drug some tiger mosquitoes into Crock's house before to try to get him to move. They ignored him and he ignored them. That's not a 100% guarantee, but I'm guessing that he ain't goin' nowhere.

I've done it before, but it is not easy to do (lure monsters in so that Crock moves). As JDR13 says though, there's not much there anyway...

DS2=Dungeon Siege 2? How is it? I didn't like the first one, too much hack and slash, not enough role playing.

dteowner, you really need to play Gothic 1&2

DS2 is 99% hack-n-slash. That said, I'm having a blast with it. Over the past two years or so, I've been fighting gaming ADD--unable to really get into anything deep enough to stick with it. DS2 is much like a level treadmill on rails, but it's a lot of fun for me and I'm sticking with it so far. I never played DS1, so I can't give any comparisons.

Some games, for all their warts, are just plain fun to play. I'd say Wiz8 is a good example of that--dated graphics, sometimes tedious combat, and yet I've got 6 wins, 3 Rifts, and over 100 Arnikas (and I don't generally replay RPGs). DS2 seems to be greater than the sum of its parts. I'd probably be hesitant to recommend it to anyone I didn't know well, though. I expect it's a love/hate kinda game and it would be hard to decide which side others would come down on.

I've had Gothic1 on my shelf for a couple years now. I've made it as far as the new camp a few times, but never got excited like so many folks at the Dot. Someday, I'll give it another swing.

he guards that chest well. and so he should, considering who he keeps trapped in it. of course he'd not want you to get to it before he's good and ready to let you. :p
