is Windows XP any good?

My parents just got a new computer today and it has got Windows XP on it. I looked around and must say I am not impressed in the least. Is it just another version of Windows with different user-interface graphics? I wonder what I was expecting? I like Win98SE much, much better, since I am so accustomed to it. Anyway, I havent tried any games on it, but I am asking if Windows XP is good for games or not? I hear not all previous programs run on XP. Is that true?

I got most of my old games to run under XP (one notable exception being the Tomb Raider engine based games). It's very stable, better than '95 or '98.

I guess it is just a matter of custom. After some learning, I wont go back to Win9X. I just like multiuser thing of XP, how I can switch between account, how each account can be specialise for working, gaming, administrating, for my girlfriend,etc.. And XP is very skinnable. It is more stable, secure, usable.. and it can run games! Basicly if it can run any game that works under WinNT (there was a site with a big database of games supporting NT, does anyone have a link?) and more (but not all games of cause). Luckily games I play run w/o problems. Here are quite old ones:
- Thief
- Thief 2
- Deus Ex
- Blade of Darkness
- Gothic

All newer games run of cause w/o problem.

You can change settings in WinXp to make it looks and runs like Win98, more or less...

Also, i not sure how long the world richest dude (you guess) would support Win98, and whether future games would continue to be supported under Win 98..., not to mention new hardwares usually have more problems with old OS...

NTCompatible

I like it, but the way I run it, it almost feels like I'm still running 2000.

I upgraded for 98 to XP about a month ago, and I wish I hadn’t. It does freeze up on me just a little bit less, but I’ve had all kinds of weird glitches. For whatever reason XP doesn’t like my video card (TNT2). So I’m hoping that after I upgrade a lot of those will go away. Many of my games run off center so I can’t see about a half to a full inch of the side, usually the right side. Most games do work, but only with all the newest patches. Internet Explorer doesn’t work right, probably because I used to have an internet company that added a stupid little icon into it. Despite claims that XP is faster, they always say each version is fast than the last, I haven’t seen any difference in the speed it runs anything. And my burning software still doesn’t have any XP drivers so I have to use shareware programs to backup my word files.
Oh the start bar and other similar things are prettier, though I find the programns stacking on the taskbar a little annoying when I'm using forums.

The important differences between XP and 9x are more architectural(behind the scenes) than aesthetic, but there are significant but subtle changes to the looks as well. XP has better security, networking, and administration. XP supports multiprocessing(Pro), more RAM and is much more stable. Unless you need to run DOS games or applications, you are better off with XP.

Yes!
Since my line of work demands me to use the latest MS OS i turned my back on 98 as soon as win2k came. there was a few months when i couldnt play some games but soon there was patches for most of them so i used win2k until xp came. considering the problems i had with win2k, xp runs like a clock.. havent had any problems yet. of course i had one or 2 game-crashes but the system has never frozen. i give it a thumb up but whatever you do; do NOT download the media-player series 9 beta! some nut at MS decided it would be smart to put it on windows-update and it has infected my system ever since. beware!

I really like XP. when I upgraded from ME to XP it not only fixed problems with my modem, but it also made my whole computer run smoother and faster. I have had no problems with recent games either, lol even DOOM runs without compatibility mode!

@Suicidal Cockroach

Did you do a fresh install or did you install overtop of 98?
Things for me always goes smoother when I do a fresh install.

About the games running off center, did you try adjusting your moniter?

What is the problem with Internet Explorer?

XP has built in burning capabilities ya know. (IIRC, I never actually tried it)

You can turn off program stacking by right clicking the taskbar, and un checking "Group similar taskbar buttons".

EDIT: I removed something

How about switching from w2000 to XP? any good/bad experiences?

I'm seriously thinking about it, since my w2k-installation is having serious trouble running games that worked fine on my old 98SE installation. I don't want to go back, since I have to actually use this machine for work these days. I also don't want to stop playing just because of this. I've had w2k for a month or so and I love the stability and better system control.

At work, we've had some bad experiences with XP when doing heavy design, so I'm a bit hesitant in upgrading, although it won't cost me at all (nope, not pirating or getting my companie's copies illegally, we have the necessary licences for telecommuting-purpose)

When I upgraded from 2000 to XP Pro I did a fresh install, so I can't say how good it is to upgrade overtop of 2000.

For me XP has had the same stability as 2000, I wouldn't know I was running XP except that when I do a CTRL-ALT-DEL the Task Manager comes up instead of the six button dialog box that came up in 2000.

Woah. I didnt realize XP was so popular! I will definately get it for my new computer when i get that. I think it rocks that you could customize how it looks. I will be making it look just like my current system, heh. Thanks for all the informative replies. You guys r cool.
