BGII - Find proof of Mae'Var's treachery - question

Like I said in my other post, I have played this game before; but I guess I forgot a few things.
I am doing the Find proof of Mae'Var's treachery quest. I am to go to Mae'Var's place and watch for treachery. But, I can't find him in the house. I went past the merchant and into the rooms, talked the guy in the room with all the doors, he said Mae'Var is "down those steps". Only problem those steps go up. I go up the stairs and there is a bunch of bedrooms. No Mae'Var. In the bedroom area, there are several doors, they all go outside except one, which is a "clever painting".
My question is where is Mae'Var????

Well, go back to the first floor, and find the steps that go down.
Mae'var is in the basement.

I guess I should turn my game "lighting" controls up. Because I went looking around the first floor and didn't see the staircase. I was just getting ready to leave the building when I noticed the staircase in the corner. I like to play the game dark and dreary; but I guess I have it to dark. Thanks.
They should have put those little signs with arrows on them at all staircases

Wouldn't be much of a thieves guild with neon arrows saying "The Boss Is Down Here!"
