Has anyone heard of this game? Well, you should! |
|
There is an RPG by the name of Nethack (dowloadable from dosgames.com or nethack.com) that is just great. What it lacks in graphics and (slightly) in storyline is overcome by a tremendous amount of detail and depth.
Has anyone heard of or played this game? Is there any other game out there that can match my obsession with this tiny little wonder? _________________ I hear they bake yummy cakes in China |

I'm too addicted to kicking sinks to get very far in NetHack.

There was an old PC game called "Rogue" which was inspired by NetHack, I think.
Your character was an ASCII "smliey face" and you went through dungeons killing monsters and collecting treasures. _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

Oh, little tip....
the only code I know of in Nethack is a pretty sneaky one:
1) create a separate folder on your desktop; call it what you want so long
as you can remember the folder
2) It also helps to create a shortcut into the NETHACK directory folder and
place it on your desktop, so do this
3) look for your saved file inside of the folder (somethig like
{username}-{character name}-NETHACK.gfi example john-Rifter-
NETHACK.gfi
4) [ctrl]-C or right-click and copy the file
5) [ctrl-V] or right-click and paste the file in that new folder I told you to
make
Now, once you save in NETHACK ([ctrl-S] i think) you will see your save in the NETHACK directory (DUH) when you die, this save dissappears and is replaced by a record of your death.
Copy the file from the other folder, paste it in your NETHACK directory, and you can use your favorite character as long as you want _________________ I hear they bake yummy cakes in China |

Nethack has been good times. I like the wands of wishing best. I tried to wish for the Amulet of Yendor, but it only gave me a plastic replica =(.
Anyway, just like Cfmdobbie, I too have been addicted to kicking sinks and killing water/mountain nymphs cause they steal from me. Darn nymphs! _________________ ~ "Knowledge speaks, Wisdom listens..." |

Check out http://www.hut.fi/~jtpelto2/nethack.html for a version with sound and graphics called Falcon's Eye. Falcon's Eye is a mouse-driven interface for NetHack that enhances the visuals, audio and accessibility of the game, yet retains all the original gameplay and game features.
Also, when you have mastered Nethack you can move on to ADOM for a little variety. http://www.adom.de/ _________________ "There is no way around it. Correct is correct. I am correct, therefore I win."

Well... one of the first hack'n'slash no-story diablo games. It had the most horrible food-system ever. The only cool thing were the classes; archeologist and tourist? Own! |
