SWG: Jump to Lightspeed - Jedi Revamp 1st Look @ Gamehelper |
|
Wayne from Gamehelper shot us a mail with this link to their 'Star Wars Galaxies: Jump to Lightspeed' Jedi revamp preview.
Similar to the starships that will be offered in Jump to Lightspeed, attaining Jedi-hood will be made easier for the new players who are waiting for the expansion's release. As you level up and become force-sensitive, you're character will be introduced to the "mysterious old man" who will educate you on the ways of the force. He'll hand you a crystal which records your progress and quest status with each step you take on your way to wearing those robes. At this stage you're called a "trainee" and will continue to adventure until you've gathered all of your materials to craft your first lightsaber.
|

I must say that I'm very confused about this article. What does it have to do with the role of Jedi in the JtL expansion? This article is basically a summary of the Jedi revamp as portrayed in the Jedi-related Friday Features at the official SWG website pre-publish #9 (weeks ago).
The reality, i.e. how the Jedi revamp has really affected the game and what is written in this article are two entirely different stories. Don't get me wrong. Not flaming or anything but I must say I'm pretty confused about the background of this article. The Jedi revamp already happened weeks ago in publish #9 and as a current subscriber to SWG (been playing since launch), I'm wondering if this editor has been shown an even newer Jedi revamp (revamp #2?) or what is this all about?
This one here confused me the most:
>>"Similar to the starships that will be offered in Jump to Lightspeed, attaining Jedi-hood will be made easier for the new players who are waiting for the expansion's release."<<
...and...
>>"With starship accessibility and the Jedi system allowing for more force-wielding pilots around the world, it's almost expected that the number of newbies to the game will increase dramatically. The fans are getting what they want, and they're about to get it all. You'll be hard-pressed to find a Star Wars fan being disappointed in this RPG come the fall."<<
This is incorrect. There is nothing "easy" about getting to Jedi Initiate. A new player will first have to do tons of quests and collect badges before he begins to "glow with the force". The player will then have to gather insane amounts of regular XP that he can convert to Force-Sensitive (FS) XP.
Let me give you an example: An averagely ambitious gamer should be able to cap his weapons and combat XP in about 2 hours. We're talking 900K weapons XP and 90K combat XP. This can be converted to 60K FS XP at the current conversion ratios.
A full branch of FS XP is 1,225,000 FS XP. This means you have to cap your weapons and combat XP approximately 20.4 times per branch which equals to more than 40 hours play time (pure grinding).
You will have to do this six times over before you hit Jedi Initiate, i.e. capping your weapons/combat XP over 124 times for at least 240 hours of grinding and capping the same type of XP (like Unarmed or Pistols XP etc) over and over and over.
What's also funny is that the village where you convert the XP is in a pretty remote location.
You will spend an additional 25 hours+ just travelling to the village to turn in XP.
We're at a minimum of 265 hours of non-stop grinding for FS XP now.
Another thing to take into account is the fact that the village has phases. You can only unlock one of the six required branches per phase. This means that you will have to play for at least 18 weeks (four and a half months!) to get to Initiate (only very few players will be able to collect the required XP in that timeframe anyway but it's still limiting).
From all of the above, you can also calculate that you will have to cap your XP *at least once per day* if you want to be an Initiate after the 18 weeks period.
That's hardly "easy" and not even remotely comparabe to the ship players will be given for free when JtL arrives.
Oh, and no one will be able to do this while "waiting for the expansion's release". The expansion will (most likely, unless it's majorly delayed) have long gone live before you get to Initiate. Also, as is reported by current Jedi, the "real" grind only begins after Initiate as you work your way up to Padawan and Knight which requires even more insane amounts of XP.
In short: Anyone know if there's a second Jedi revamp supposed to happen when JtL arrives? ... Haven't heard anything about that yet. If not, one must conclude that this editor has a) either not been playing the game for very long or b) only played it at the press event where you could probably insta-level your character to a template of your choice or c) has not played the game at all yet. |

I concur, from what I've read, it's now harder and more time consuming to gain jedi, just less random. Out of all of it, the 'waiting period' is the worst.. i.e. only those that were very close to being jedi under the old system are allowed to advance in the new system, the next closest have to wait a month or so, on down the line ending with people who have not started towards Jedi at all.
In the end, I believe this article is misleading, as someone picking up the game now might actually think they have a shot at getting Jedi quickly, when they probably don't have a shot making it for almost a year. Truly SOE worthy the new system is.... |
