NVIDIA Unveils Technoilogy For Two Graphics Cards @ HardOCP

Though not specifically RPG-related, this interesting article on NVIDIA's latest "new" SLI (new meaning of SLI = "Scalable Link Interface") technology that allows for the installation of two graphics cards simultaneously - as opposed to the current "buy the newest, trash the old" form of upgrading your computer's video card...

Now in 2004 NVIDIA has introduced their new SLI technology, but note that it does not stand for Scan Line Interleaving. This new technology is called "Scalable Link Interface" or SLI for short. Of course all of us old timers still get excited when we hear "SLI" and NVIDIA knows this. The new SLI is possible because of the new PCI-Express bus that was introduced last week. NVIDIA is telling us that when used with the Unreal3 engine, they are seeing increases in frame rate of up to 87%. To qualify this statement, I think it is needed to note here that an engineer stood behind this statement, not just NVIDIA's marketing department.

I wonder if running two of these cards will require a 960 watt power supply, since 480 is the requirement for one GF6800.

I dont think you need any special support. The 3DFX version didnt need any...

As cool as this is, its just overkill anyway. There are only two situations in which you could use such a configuration:

1. Its a few years from now, and instead of throwing away your old GeForce 6800, you just add a second one (Cheap by now) and your ready to go.

2. Its the present day and you are a ubergeek, and you just want the fastest possible setup, even though there is almost nothing out that could possibly use all that horsepower. (Apart from maybe CGI Apps such as Maya)

Now if that very fancy new 30" Apple Flat Screen was compatible with my PC, I would sure like to run HL2 & Doom3 at 2000xwhatever screen res with full 8xAA @ 60fps

I totally agree with the first option:)
For the second: if you want to work with Maya, Studio max and such you should use Quadro cards, and other programmable vga cards:)
I'm eager to see the first tests:)

Just goes to prove the saying; Everything old is new again.

Since nVidia gluped down 3Dfx in one swallow, oh like ages ago, wondered why none of their inovation appeared in nVidia products (directly obvious at least), can see now, it was just a matter of time.
