You dont need a full on rogue in this game, 3 to 4 rogue levels is plenty to get skills up high enough to open and detect everything ... not that traps really harm you much at higher levels (especially not my half-orc rogue/barbarian).

True...but I find them fun for flanking and the sneak damage is quite amazing. With her high Dex and various mobility feats she's hard to hit so she can slip into the middle of the enemy where most other characters (except maybe a suitable barb) would get sliced up.

I just started playing ToEE today.

My cleric whups butt better than my fighter. Go, go power cleric!
Bard's are fun and can surprisingly hold their own in a scrap.
My rogue can't hit the broad side of a barn with his crossbow, but his sneak attacks are devastating.
And my little sorcerer, with her incredibly high dexterity dodges everything thrown at her while she skips merrily around her opponents throwing spells of flaming death everywhere.

I like this game.

It's good, isn't it?.

Check your Rogue has Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot - ranged weapons are awful without them. I just stick to cool sneak attacks.

My level 9 rogue has a 28 dexterity (halfling, +6 gloves, 2 level attribute points) two weapon fighting, weapon finesse, and improved two weapon fighting.

He can basically kill a hill giant by himself given two rounds. Lets my fighter do the same thing to another while my mage hammers the remainder.

Rogues are definitely worth it to keep going past level 3 or 4... especially if you don't have a bard and you want to get all the dialogue options.

One of my saves with a potent party combination is utterly garbaged, still, due to the DDHELP thing. Rest seemed to work fine... which is a good thing, just went back to my main 'good' party and they are largely undefeated (two fights challenged them... two reloads on one, two on the other). Of course, last night I got the DDHELP thing quitting the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if none of my saves work today or if the game doesn't load.

Yes, it is party based.
You can create up to 5 members and then drag along some NPCs.

Advantage to living in Bermuda - Gothic 2 has been on sale since July.
Disadvantage - TOEE is not to be found anywhere on the island

Oh well, I am headed to the states for a work thing early next month ... guess I can wait until then *grin*, but man, oh man, does this game sound like it is for me. I've been looking for it for the last couple of weeks, and the more I read the more I want to get a copy!

@Xen - Can't wait for your review.

But in IWD2 if you played by a single vharacter the enemies quantity would falll very quickly.

You could certainly try it but I'm with Val - it would be too hard. Besides, the combat system in this game is best appreciated (IMO) with team tactics You don't have to use all 5-8 characters - perhaps 3-4 would make a good go of it. If you don't like parties, this may not be the right game for you.

The random encounters might drop off based on the level of the party and total party levels... but the set encounters are set. And most of the encounters are set in this game. No one character could hope to survive the game, despite what Tim Caine claimed (that a single bard could beat the game, if you wished). Will NOT happen. A single Greater TEmple Bugbear will massacre him with their 'improved trip - sneak attack as you fall - sneak attack as you stand - you may only move - move - repeat until you are dead'.

In pen and paper you would have the option to stay DOWN until your party had dealt with the nuisance. Solo you could choose feats like prone fighting, which allows you to attack while prone without suffering a -4. There is no such option in TOEE so you just die.

No, no single character... even a level 10 fighter with a 28 armor class (got one) and max hit points (mine has 151)... could hope to defeat TOEE. Though that fighter could give it a shot and ... well... die at the first hold person spell.

Three could do it, probably, but the game is definitely written for 5.

Additionally, if you just went with one character he'd probably be level 10 by the time he entered the temple... who wants to do another 15 or 20 hours without any sort of change? I'm crafting items with my casters just so SOMEONE gets experience... my fighter, bard, and cleric are level 10, my rogue is level 9, and my wizard is level 9 and holding.

I don't say that I like playing alone(I've beaten IWD2 with a party with 6 mambers: 3 mages (cleric\druid\wizard), a Paladin, a bard & a rogue), but I was just curious. Anyway, I don't think I'll ever play this game.

It would be a neat experiment... one I might try out after I've got the review written (I'm getting unbearable slowdown on temple 4 or more, though, even after a clean reboot... combined with the DX errors I'm getting (and can't hope to fix until tomorrow HOPEFULLY... playing new computer games without internet connection SUCKS due to the constant crappy patch-later mentality of publishers)... that could still be a while.

I'd go with half-orc barbarian 7/cleric 3 for a solo. Barbarian first, three levels of cleric in a row, then straight barbarian. Only need a 12 wisdom with that build, as you'll be using the cleric levels to brew potions and cast healing spells. Potions of bull strength, endurance, and of course healing.

Hmm. Power attack at level 1. Cleave level 3. Brew potion level 6. Make sure his strength is through the roof to help against trips (not enough, since the bugbears get something like a +9... but every point of strength bonus eats into their chances to trip you).

Alternatively, a druid wildshaped into a bear while summoning hoardes of augmented animal allies might do well alone... because he'd be a one man army. Resting would be tricky, though.
