Which familiar you like to use in TOEE? |
|
From this screenshot, it seem we have got a lot of choices for familiar:
Weasel
Toad
Snake
Raven
Rat
Owl
Lizard
Hawk
Cat
Bat
I wonder which familiar is the best (most powerfull, or their usefulness). What everybody else think? and Xen, our D&D wizard, what's your suggestion? . |

I don't know about the strengths/weaknesses/abilities of each familiar, but I'd have to say snake. Lot's of stealth and maybe poisonous? However, I'll hear what Xen says before I pick one for iron mode. _________________ = Member of The Nonflamers' Guild =

My words exactly.
But if I had to choose purely for my amusement I would chose Hawk. _________________ Money - An article which may be used as a universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and as a universal provider of everything except happiness. |

Falcon seems like the best fighter to me so I picked it. I can see how snake would be good as well as a cat or weasel or owl but I have to go with Falcon. |

Most powerful in 3rd edition is the Almighty Toad. It gave a +2 con bonus.
However, it doesn't in 3.5 ... so if they truly translated it up then the best familiar on that list is Bat, depending on how they implemented familiar senses.
Bats have blindsense, which lets you see invisible creatures. In normal D&D this means the bat would send you the empathic image of invisible foes and be completely able to see perfectly in the dark and guide you. IN a computer game... well... we'll see what happens.
The snake is indeed poisonous. My evil Sorcerer in tabletop had one called Lord Precocious... I cast stoneskin and improved invisibility on it and it killed an entire barracks full of guards while they slept.
But the poison isn't that potent. It's a DC 11 fortitude save. At low levels that's pretty handy... a save is a save, after all... but at mid levels most creatures will save against that on that 3/4 times (at least)... and kill the snake.
Combat wise the falcon does the most damage and is fastest. Of course, that's not saying much. A falcon is no match for a peasant, let alone an orc. Using it to deliver touch attack spells is particularly devastating, though.
Familiars very much are safer out of sight, out of mind. If there's an empathic sense ability in the game, though, which lets you see what they see... and if enemies don't react to them (what orc shoots a bat on general principle?... they will have some very useful scouting roles. If there's no empathic sense and enemies see them as 'PC' flagged and attack instantly and unrealistically then they will not be useful at all. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I want my cat Cats and wizards is sort of classy together I think. I'd also love to have an imp - like in Salvatore's books. But I think it's not an option though. _________________ - Druids do not fight with metal weapons! Sit here, and you over here. Put the elbows of your right arms on the table...

I picked up from different forums, so I don’t know how accurate this information is?
Bat +3 listen
Cat +3 move silently
Hawk +3 spot (in bright light)
Lizard +3 climb
Owl +3 spot (shadows)
Rat +2 Fortitude Saves
Raven +3 appraise, can speak one language of masters choice
Snake (tiny viper) +3 bluff
Toad +3 hit points
Weasel +2 Reflex Saves _________________ Money - An article which may be used as a universal passport to everywhere except heaven, and as a universal provider of everything except happiness. |

That information is correct.
It's the non-bonus applications of a familiar... their senses and combat endurance... that determine the usefulness of a familiar overall. Though naturally a +2 fort save or +3 hit points will always be useful for any wizard. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Before seeing this I was going to go with a bat since they are night fliers, and have very keen senses, always a plus, but if you can talk with the raven (I am NOT thinking about a computer game here) that allows a more detailed level of communication. It also allows the familiar to be a messenger ... could be a life saver (especially at lower levels). _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

UNless you choose that one language to be Infernal, like a player in the game I run did.
"Mo'kah chee rah cho na'ka!" hisses the raven

Xen, where do you find these players? I assume he was planning on using infernal to speak to the bird so no one else could understand? Or was he just plain clueless? _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

Many interesting familiars, don't know which one to pick.

So the lizard has bonus in climbing? But how useful is that? For climbing up wall or ceiling and then dropping their feces on unwary enemy? . |

Part thought the language was a cool choice, part nobody else spoke it, part this is the same guy who make a Champions 4rd Edition hero who was permanently desolidified, invisible to all senses (including telepathic), and who took damage from passing through solid matter, and had no powers that affected the corporeal world (nor turn his powers off). He was immune to needing to eat, breath, sleep, age and all the side-effects any of those produced as well.
We called that character the Cosmic Non-Character. He's never quite lived it down... _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
