Amen to your comments, by the way! The trend in RPGs towards action at the cost of other aspects of the genre is disturbing. It's one of the reasons why I look towards indie developers to fill the gap.

If you're going to use Morrowind's quality as a means to back up your argument regarding development times and game quality you're going to need a more objective source than "It was horrible."

Now, it seems that averaged from 53 professional (and semi-professional) reviews Morrowind averaged 89.6%. 821 user votes averaged out to 8.7 coming very close to the reviews. As much as I hate using numbers such as these to support my case I find it difficult to correlate the vast majority of positive reviews with a game that, objectively speaking, is horrible.

It seems to me that while a game may or may not satisfy one's personal desires it's unlikely that a game suffering such glaring faults as to be so terrible would ever get that many positive reviews. As such an opinion so obviously in the minority carries little weight as evidence that Grimoire will be a bad game - to anyone else that is.

I like your reasoning. While I didn't particularly care for MW, I did play it for about 100 hours, but IMO it wasn't as good as Daggerfall after it was fully patched. Still, it wasn't a horrible game, it just tended to be a boring game for various design reasons. I have higher hopes for Oblivion which I also plan to purchase. I just don't know how anyone can pre-judge a game they haven't either seen or played. I thought Dungeon Lords would be great; it's not. I thought FATE might be silly; it's not. Some people thing Grimoire will be the terrible; it's not.

My, what a fun bit of reading.

To put one silly theory to bed, Corwin is not the only person tied into this game. I'm also part of the beta team. I can verify that the game is not vaporware. I'm not certain whether Cleve will be able to meet his October target, but I'd be willing to bet it will be available by Christmas. Just as possible, Cleve might prove me wrong and have it ready by his target.

I had minimal exposure to the game prior to the beta, so I think I can claim to be looking at the experience with some clarity. Here's what I see so far. Graphics whores need not apply. The graphics are passable, particularly for a "homemade" release, but nobody is going to be buying a new graphics card just to see the pretty water. Fans of the Wizardry and Might & Magic franchises will probably be pleased. Grimoire gets good grades for gameplay, which was what made Wiz and M&M great. I'm really not far enough into the beta to speak intelligently to story, but my initial impression is that the story is good enough.

Finally, I've had a bit of exposure to Cleve's politics. He's a bit extreme for my taste, but I fail to see what that has to do with Grimoire. The game doesn't have any hint of politics/preaching ~30 hours in, and I don't expect to see any.

Just to add a postscript to Dte's post. The game gets better the further into it you get. Dte is not yet 5% into the game after 30 hours. Once you know what to do, it takes about that long to complete the free shareware section which is at most 10% of the game. After that, massive new areas are opened up and the game and plot(s) really take off. If you don't put labels on every exit in every map, you WILL very quickly get lost. I do and I still did!! The game becomes very addictive after awhile; you want to finish just one more map, then just quickly check where that ladder goes and oh dear, now I have four more choices to make and.....you get the picture!!

If you check out my preview of the game from last year, you will discover that not only is there an automap, but you can add notes and use it to get to any point you've visited on the map almost instantly; it's called mapwalking and it's a trememdous time saver.

Hmmmm, this is sounding interesting. Oddly enough (based on my earlier postings) I loved the might and magic series (especially 6 and 7). Maybe I should reload one of those to play on while I wait for Grimore? It'll have to be MM7 though since I recently tried to play MM6 and was unable to get it to run in winXP.

That excuse may have been valid 10 or maybe even 5yrs ago. But there's no real reason why gamers can't have it ALL now. In-depth character customerization, deep story line, over a hundred different spells AND great graphics. We are in the "new millenium" so the technology IS there, but because of deadlines and money developers are not using ALL that's availible to make a complete game. Why does it always have to be one or the other..good gameplay but no story, good story but no graphics, ham but no burger, peanut butter but no jelly. There's no excuse why any game made shouldn't have ALL those factors in making a complete game. (At least from a technical standpoint)

I think you hit the nail on the head...time is money....at least in the corporate mindset. Good stories with good gameplay AND good graphics...the company probably thinks they'd be outta business before they got the game half way completed. I'd just settle for a good story and good gamplay. Graphics is the least of my concerns. Gameplay is king for me, but then I have to have a story too. There has to be a *reason* for tromping through the wilderness and towns, killing, training and gathering up goodies.

Ahem...I've digressed from Grimore. I'm looking forward to more information about the game from the beta testers when they get farther along in the game.

@ corwin and dteowner: Keep it up guys. I'm really starting to get interested in the game, based on your comments. I like the sound of mapwalking and being able to jot notes all over the place.

@cecirdr: You must be a female clone of myself I love Might and Magic 6,7 and Jeff Vogel is my hero! I've liked all his games except for the historical one.
Actually, MM3 is my favorite MM game, but I may have been playing the series longer than you. I'm really enjoying Geneforge 3 ATM. I just registered it over the weekend and am playing as a solo agent. My gal is all magic all the time
I love the choices that you have to make in the game.

That's Nethergate right? I remember playing that one. I liked it though...but not as much as Geneforge. I just downloaded Blades of Avernum. Somehow, I've managed to never play blades. I thought it might be interesting because of the editor. I'll probably try out Geneforge 3 soon.

Ya know...it is kinda sad how I kept the MM game CDs only to find out that I can't play them on my computer anymore. I don't have room to keep old computers just so I can play old games. It's a shame to see good games vanish that way. I'm appreciative of the Jeff Vogels of the world who continue to make games that are "old school". But, I'm still gonna miss the MM series. I've tried every trick I've found on the web to run MM6, but it's a non-starter on my system.

I was very hasty earlier in the thread to judge the potential of a game before I'd even seen it. There does (stereotype alert!) seem to be something in the water of the more creative people on our planet. They tend to have some very unusual ideas compared to the "norm". Now, me (who's not creative) I'm trying really hard to move past making decisions out of fear, worry, or thinking that other people will harm me. (even though they may very well harm me, I dont' want to make a decision based on that) It's tough...because when you try to alter that insidious of a mind set, you realize how it colors *everything* that you say and choose to do. The most recently consequence is a realization that playing RPGs is a mental step back toward a more traditional mindset. So I'm in a bit of a catch 22. ....personal decision....just gotta figure out how I want to handle it.

Sorry...I've rambled in this thread yet again.

Hi!

It's great to meet so many fellow Cleve Blakemore fans who share his honest views and are prepared to stand up to the bullying PC brigade who try to put him down. I am sure you are all looking forward to Grimoire's release as much as I am!

If you want something to pass the time until its release, you could do far worse than give some of these great (FREE!) games a try.
