Do you have to have a knife?

you can backstab

I don't know if you HAVE to have a weapon... but you backstab by SNEAKING up to the person and hitting them while being UNDETECTED.

My fighter/assasin type character has done it many times.. it actually says Critical Damage at the bottom of the screen when you successfully do it.

I believe you get up to 4x your attack result when you do this. All the NPCs in Morrowind appear to acknowledge you verbally (and MOBs run at you) when they see you, so you can backstab if these acknowledgements don't occur as you approach the enemy.

But then you have to sneak, wich only let you do the first attack while the rest requires traditional force. My monk-type is rather useless...
