Game crashes to windows in city

Been playing only for a little while, but it's been crashing to windows when I'm talking to an NPC at night in the city, generally in the middle of a conversation.

Hardware spec:
2.6 Gz, 1 gig mem, 60 gig hardrive, 5200 geforce fx, flatscreen, play on 1280x1024

Based on the error report, I assume something is going on with it's memory management. Any help would be appreciated, I love the game, just having an anoying, semi-consisten bug.
Here is the head of the error report generated by Gothic II:

D3DIM700.dll is part of DirectX.
I see the following possibilities for the crash (in no order):
-bug in Gothic 2
-bug in D3D/DX
-incompatible DirectX version; maybe 9 instead of 8.
-crappy sound drivers (because it happened during a conversation).
-RAM timing is too aggressive
-RAM module defective
-programs running in the background -->see FAQ for incompatibilities

Try to exclude some of the possibilities.

I do have directX9b, are there problems with that?

It crashes in the city outside night and outside conversation, as I have recently discovered.

That eliminates sound, no programs are in the background, Ram module checks out.

Yes, there are problems with DirectX9. They´re hard to nail down. Afaik during the development no proper documenatation for DirectX9 was available. So if your graphics card doesn´t require DirectX9 you should go back.

Okay, regressed to 8.1b,
regressed nvidia drivers
updated all XP patches

Still get the error. Before teh nvidia upgrade, I still got:

//===================== MODULES =======================

After I regressed the nvidia driver, I go a C++ module error (generic pointer bug error).

I am a coder, been a long time, this looks like a memory violation error. It crashed once in the middle of a load, so I am inclinded to believe it may have something to do with the funky memory management of the Gothic II system.

I really like the game, but 10->15 minutes of running around the city and talking cause it to crash. Is there any other help to be had? I read a few other posts which had similar problems, no resolution posted. Any clue on a patch?

support@piranha-bytes.com bounced as well, so is this the only supported help?

For good measure I did Memtest and the memory unit is fine.

So, I may have been able to fix the problem. I increased the cache values for texture and sound memory (Figured the city has the most flying through it). I also set the flashing polygon flag to 0. I noticed a strange blackout behaviour when talking to npcs, but I ran all over town and talked to a bunch of people with little problems.

I'll post again if I continue to have the problem, but for others who have the same problem, try it out.
