Ratmen - SPOILER
   

Ever since I progressed the plotline where I find out I'm the Guardian, ratmen, on different levels, and apparently at random times and locations, come out of nowhere, attack me once, and then vanish. Is that normal?

Yes this is normal.
Have a look in your private room in the Human Castle: you will see some rituals have been performed near your bed: blood painting on the wall and a dead "headless" chicken on your bed with a note: somebody wants to kill you.(
