I just saw the news that G 3 could possibly use the graphics engine from "The Guild 2". I've never heard of that game and couldn't find it on the Games Database here at RPGdot. Does anyone know where I could see some screenshots of that game so as to get an idea of what G3 could possibly look like?

The Guild 2 was shown at E3 as a part of Jowood's lineup. The game is still in early stage of development, as is Gothic 3. What turned out to be what GameStart article meant was that both games use the same basic licenced engine components. Surely, they will develop in different directions...

The graphics engine (usually 3D nowadays) doesn't define the look of a game. It's a software toolkit for creating interactive 3D content.

You might use one and the same 3D engine to program a sports-, racing-, action-, RP-, MMORP-, adventure-, strategy- or shooter game, or whatever you want. Both Dark Age of Camelot and Panzer General 3 used the same engine, for example, yet they didn't have too much in common in the graphics department.

The city isn't surrounded by orcs (just some scouts and some colonels). But the castle (the city in G1) is surrounded by orcs.

a) If you mean G3 with g2 than yes, the capital of Myrtana is as far as we know now surrounded by orcs.
b) No, maybe you will land in the world when it's dark, something like the valley of mines in G2, but not permanent. PB likes to make a so realistic world as possible so the day/night circle will certainly not be missing. It could also be that it's dark because of some curse cast by for example Xardas, but we don't know such story details yet.

I can tell you sth else from the devs: Khorinis will not be seen and certainly no VoM in Gothic 3. Kairo said that in the thread "Hi from the devs" that Gorath recently locked (thank you for that).

I hope they changed that already (it's after all a long time since KaiRo visited). I really want to go back to Khorinis and the VoM

Well don't I feel dumb now. Thanks for enlightening me Jaz.
So I guess what I take from that fact is that the graphics engine is important because one has to have the right tools in order to get the results they desire, right? Sort of like prefering Adobe Photoshop over the cheesy paint program Windows comes with.

Nice comparison .
On another note, licensing a graphics engine instead of programming everything from scratch (even if the licensed material is just used for the basics and most engine parts might be replaced by self-written programs in the long run) allows more human resouces to be put into the development of the actual game.
