...yeah I agree piln, even tho I initially chalked most of my disenchantment up to a pre-viewing trailer overdose, after seeing it again I find that it was actually much more than simply that.

Particularly after seeing "Ju-rei The Uncanny" recently (which is such a blatant Ju-on rip-off it should be called "Ju-off"), I see the faults of the Grudge even clearer. For Takashi's sake, they even use the telltale clicking/groan whatever sound of Kayako! But in some aspects it actually better than it's predecessor.

For starters, Ju-rei adds sort of a gaussian blur to the phantoms alot of the time, which I find to be far more effective than the crystal clear images of the Grudge ghosties. Secondly, the Grudge has flow problems. We have a clear timeline with Ju-rei, as opposed to the sort of jumbled order of the segments of Ju-on, which I really dont care for in a movie. Even tho the segments are actually viewed backwards from ten to one in Ju-rei, in a weird sort of twist that had me hating it at first, but liking it by the time the film had ended. You see the end result, then work back thru the chain of individual hauntings of the victims.

But back to the Grudge, like I said about Shikoku, little girls just arent too scary, and for that matter neither are children in general. They need to be used briefly or fleeting, as shocking apparitions that suprise you, perhaps covered in blood or some shocking sight like that. That's what worked for me in the Grudge, when Kayako was quite bloody and messed up. Even tho it was a drawn out part there at the end, she looked and acted grotesquely scary. Kids otherwise need to be fleeting faces at the window or in a mirror or some such thing, but not sitting there giving you the menacing glare. It just doesnt work, it's like "ok little boy ghost, I told you not to spook me like that, now go to your room"='.'=

But that's a part of the ghostly hijinks in the Grudge, and I dont want to totally trash Ju-on and give the impression I dislike it. It's a cool film, I'm not regretting my purchase. I was lead to believe it was just mind blowing by trusted horror sources of mine, and it just kinda left me lukewarm towards it.

Oh yeah, also the locale/not local nature of the haunting had me a bit confused as well. At first I thought it was the central haunted house thing, then it seemed to go way farther than that to roaming evil spirits.

Check out "Ju-off", I think it'll blow your mind with how blatantly it rips off the Grudge!
