Game crashes while starting up |
|
ok, i just bought this game today, being huge fan of Gothic 1 i was really looking forward to this and guess what happens, it frezes while starting, crap!
ok, it doesnt exactly freze. it just knocks out the mouse (doesnt work) but the rest i working, keyboard, the few programms in the background.
it always happens at the same spot, after loading something (a bara that says something about this may take ´several minutes) it goes back to the gothic 2 logo and then the mouse stops working and when i press Ctrl+alt+delete i cant fing anything about gothic 2 running
sorry about my crappy english ^^
my sustem spec
Amd xp1700+
Geforce ti4 4600 (latest drivers)

Does this only affect Windows 98 systems?
Same thing happened to me. It is a LONG delay caused by the Virtual Disk File program which Gothic 2 insists on running every time on *certain* systems.
Go into your Gothic/System folder and move the file vdfs.exe somewhere else (to the root directory for instance).
Now Gothic 2 should load pretty quickly.
If you get a black screen/lockup after the Gothic 2 logo has gone, edit the Gothic.ini file and set the value `playlogovideos` to a zero (instead of a 1).
This is the last time I will post these fixes.
The game should never have been released in this state. Many of us have been victims of this `virtual disk file system`. A patch and/or official statement from JoWood or Piranha Bytes would be kinda handy. Apologies to them if there has already been one. |

Sorry to hear it didn`t work.
When I first installed the game I had the `virtual disk file` message showing every time. It would fill the blue boxes in its progress bar nine or ten times and take over a minute doing this. Then there was a delay of two and a half minutes where nothing happened (no hard disk activity - just the Gothic 2 small loading screen). After that delay, the game would start loading (hard disk drive light came on).
When I moved the file vdfs.exe from out of the Gothic2 System folder I got no `virtual disk file` message/delays etc. Just straight to the Gothic2 loading screen and the game loads quickly and without any delay whatsoever. |

@Kirkr:
The link to an updated version of the VDFS file has been posted days ago. You´re actually the only person on this forum who still proposes removing the file instead of trying the updated version.
@Dragonhunter: How new are your mouse drivers? Logitech updates them every few weeks. Don´t know about MS, though. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

1) He didn't say he have win 98
2) This "fix" you suggested doesn't work ( set no intro movies )
3)( for gothic 2 ppl ) , first I love you all for making this game
and second you should just write on the books - no win98 support and that it , we win 98 ppl won't have anything to negg about

Good, but this time I recommend to use one from the Win9x Driver Archive.
(the latest with WHQL certificate is 30.82 - the one we tested the game with)

If the updated version of the VDFS-Init Tool still doesn't work,
make sure you have the latest IDE/mainboard drivers.
(esp. if you have an VIA board)

Your choice. It costs one install+reboot to test 30.82 and another install+reboot to revert to 44.03.
