Well, at first it would seem that a ranger would be the way to go. Keep in mind though, that the reason you would want a ranger is for two weapon feat. That feat is only active on a ranger wearing light armor. So that means, no medium or heavy armor. I think that you would like a fighter that has two weapon fighting and maybe point blank shot or rapid shot or some such. That way you can wear heavy armor and use a bow. Gives you good attacks with better armor than a ranger. _________________ Oh, freddled gruntbuggly, thy micturations are to me....

The best fighter is a fighter. That's just the way it is in 3e. Since it's all the poor guys can do they do it really, really well.
Just grab point blank shot, rapid shot, and then weapon focus, weapon specialization, and improved critical. All with your favorite bow... which will, of course, be a composite longbow. Add my strength bonus AND have a x3 critical hit and fire faster? Yes, please.
After you've tanked out those feats you might want to consider multiclassing into another class, since you're done, really. Ranger is good for the extra skills, as is barbarian. Paladin is great if you can and have a charisma bonus. Rogue is fantastic as an archer won't want to get hit much anyways and Rogues get some useful skills to bypass traps and avoid damage. Plus if you win initiative or fire into a melee you get your sneak attack damage added to your bow. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

You could also go with a dexterity based Monk (make sure you pick weapon finesse). _________________ (@) |

Not bad for the special abilities, true. But the purposes is to avoid hand to hand... and that's where the monk shines... _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

Actually, the 'best' way to do it would be to go fighter until you have all the feats I mentioned, and then go ranger from then on. Best of all worlds that way. Your attack is great, you have more skills at the end than a fighter would by far, all the feats you want, and possibly an animal companion and some spells.
Why limit yourself to one class when you can get two? Multiclassing works well if you're human and a specialist character. Max out your specialist feats with fighter and then grab something (preferably a fighter class so you don't affect your attack bonus) else. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

If i pick fighter first, i begin without a bow.
and my skillset is:
Armor Proficiency Heavy, light, Medium
Shield Proficiency
Weapon Proficiency (martial, simple)
Quick to master
Power attack
Weapon Focus
Dodge
Can i still choose point blank shot, rapid shot weapon focus weapon specialization improved critical later on?
I want a caracter that mainly uses a bow to attack. _________________ The original RED poster (retired now)

Sure can. 5 feats as a human fighter... well... you can have your entire list by... 1 at 2, 1 at 3, 1 at 4, 2 at 6....
Level 6... except improved critical, which you have to be level 8 to get. So you're doing just fine for your target level of 8. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
