Champions: Return to Arms (PS2) - Review @ UGO

Snowblind's EverQuest-based 'Champions: Return to Arms' has been reviewed at UGO, where the score was 'B+':
Last year, Snowblind Studios and Sony Online Entertainment scored a hit for the PS2 with the release of Champions of Norrath, an Everquest branded hack-and-slash RPG. It was met with both critical and commercial success, no doubt based upon the feverish popularity of the Everquest brand. A year later, the franchise returns with Champions: Return to Arms, a direct sequel to Norrath. Like the original, it's a fine hack-and-slash RPG that's both lengthy and challenging, and sports vastly improved online play. A couple of silly bugs hamper the game, but they do not ruin it. Like most hack-and-slash games, it can become repetitive, but if you're a fan of this genre, RTA is a no-brainer, and definitely one of the better action RPGs on any game console despite some notable flaws.

Since we really enjoy(ed) the first game in the series , we bought this one as soon as it was released here. Talk about a letdown.

The last remains of RPG are gone, there's no storyline or attempt to create a storyline, it nothing more than a number of missions based around a store. The missions vary in difficulty from rediculously easy to completely unbalanced and are all but impossible for some of characters you can choose to play, after a few days playing with most of the characters the one conclusion is that micromanagement of your money is far more important than your dungeon romp, at some time in the game you will run out of money because of the enormous amount of health and mana potions needed to finish a level.
All missions start at the store, all missions will have opponents frrom the previous game, all missions have a number of mid-bosses and ALL missions will pit you against an end boss in a small arena.
It's 100% arcade with powerups , level difficulty doesn't vary with the game , level difficulty depends entirely on the character you play , skills and abilities are a joke , a level 15 Berseker with souped up melee and "thown axes" skill , does more damage with a bow than a Ranger of the same level with maxed out bow skills , while that same Berseker will find that those melee & thrown weapon skills are about as usefull as a condom to a hedgehog.

I'd give the game a negitive score but since that's impossible , I'll leave it at a 0/10.
