Sound, but no video with ATi 9800 Pro

I just installed Gothic (so I can get a good feel for Gothic II before playing it), but after the initial "underwater" splash screen, I don't see anything but a black screen. Does someone know how I can fix this and play Gothic?

Windows 98SE
DirectX 9.0b
AMD Athlon 2800+
1022MB PC2700 (system.ini tweaked to work)
ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Cat 4.3)
50+GB free on both drives

Gothic patch 1.08k (won't even start with 1.08j)

Part of the problem is that resolutions over 800x600 don't seem to go over well.

Second possible solution is to patch to 1.08k, then install the mod kit for 1.08k.

Regardless, it's "working" now, though crashing more often than a drunken sailor at a bumper-car convention...

These problems are unusual. I think we have many people with Radeon 9700 cards you can play G1 without problems.

Do you have FSAA disabled in your driver and Fog disabled in the gothic.ini?

I have Radeon 9800Pro and have no problem in G1 under WinXP. Catalyst 4.4.

AFAIK, you can't disable FSAA or AA filtering completely with the standard ATi drivers. I have turned them all the way down to 2X, though..

It doesn't seem to matter if fog is enabled or disabled in the ini

It still crashes a hell of a lot. I don't know if it will be playable with so many crashes for no apparent reason.

Hey there sBnria,

Just a thought, what size is your apperture window setting in your mobo bios
and how much system mem installed? Other system info's would also help.
What motherboard/version do you have?

The patch 1.08j was only for the german version. Do not use that on English!

You will have to re-install. Only the patch 1.08k should be used on the English version. It fixes the black screen problem with ATI cards that I had also.
