equiping weapon

hi ive just started playing and i cant seem to figure out how to use my inventory beyond tab to open it...how do i equip my weapon...or use anything in my inventory...help

Well open your inventory using Tab. Then circle aroudn it using arrows. Select a weapon press the use button ( ctrl for example ) + the forward key ( up arrow for example )

Imagine it the following way:
Use alternative controls. Now you have a shooter-like setup (ASDW + mouse, weapons & spells on 1,2,...). If you want ot do something you have to press the 'action key' (CTRL or the LMB) and a directional key to specify the target. In 9 out of 10 cases this will be LMB + forward. This combo does almost everything.
