I got a question about msn messenger

I know this may not be the appriopriate forum but it is the absolutely off topic forum. I decided to post here because of the high traffic. Posting at some microsoft technical assistance forums takes years to get a reply. Anyhow, I have msn messenger 7.0 that runs as msnmsgr (from the C:\program files\msn messenger) in my task manager. However, when I boot up my old copy of msn messenger that runs as msmsgs runs as well. How do I disable the old one? It's not under my add/remove programs list and I don't want to straight out delete it the folder (C:\program files\messenger\) because I don't want to have any error messages come out as windows starts up. I took a look at my win.ini file but there was nothing that had msmsgs. What should I do? What file do I need to edit? Any knowledge would be appreciated.

windows key + r
type 'msconfig'
alt+tab over to the 'startup' tab uncheck everything related to msn messenger
click 'apply' then 'ok'

This should keep it from loading at startup (and anything else you click off). Then uninstall at your leisure (might have to do a fresh install; I don't use msn proper anymore).

If I understand your problem correctly this'll work.

Either way, I recommend GAIM. Supports multiple chat clients (AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, Jabber, and Gadu-Gadu) and IRC as well as tab chat windows. It's not quite complete yet (file transfers aren't implemented for ICQ and MSN for instance) but it's pretty stable. Been using it for sometime now.
