Will I be the only one to say that the graphics look poor by comparison with Baldurs Gate 1/Diablo 1 and that the spirit's voice (can't remember which character I chose unfortunately) is totally out of character? Mind you, it grates a bit to be in a classic fantasy setting only to discover we're talking about King Richard a few minutes later.

Not impressed, not by a long way...

To me it just goes to show how far offline games have fallen (in the main, there are obvious exceptions) since the advent of MMORPGs.

Hmm, funny how the sole saviour of the world always starts out with a loin cloth and a plank of wood, no skills to speak of, total amnesia and a complete lack of understanding as to his role in life.

Still, thank Heavens for the omnipotent mage that is always there to guide him on his way, far more powerful than he will ever be but then the mage isn't "the Chosen One".

After all, "It is your destiny, mortal...".


Is that a fair summary of offline RPGs to date ?!

Don't you start out the same in a MMORPG? You have no skills, no weapons, no armor...

The story in single-player rpgs might often be similar, but at least there is one

Also it's not about how it starts, but how it progresses and how it ends.

And being the normal person among millions of normal persons in real life I want to be someone significant in games

I have to agree to Loremaster:
the graphics look poor, the animations are clumsy and to fast for my taste.. the combat is worse than in diablo (clickfest...)
the menu is the total difference of user-friendly..

i am REALLY disappointed!

maybe the story will be good.. weīll see.

I agree Lord_Darkmoon, that is indeed how you start out in a MMORPG, but then you're not the sole saviour of the world.

Not that I'm criticising offline RPGs, I have played them all since Bard's Tale 1 and I agree the storyline is usually what makes them. I also used to love party-based games, but now that very few offline games cater for more than a single player-controlled character I find that Two-Boxing a MMORPG like EQ is just as entertaining, especially if you have 10 characters to choose between hehe !

I was merely pointing out the common uniformity of all offline RPGs, even Gothic 2 follows almost the exact formula of Gothic 1 - enter the city, choose between 3 guilds after getting all the masters to approve of your citizenship etc..

I think there's a distinct lack of originality in both offline and online games these days, but then perhaps I've been playing them too long !

Itīs quite simple, Loremaster. The paying customers decides through purchases in the shops. Over and over again this decision was: we donīt buy innovative games!

Well, I was really surprised by LH...I didn't expect this nice, atmospheric game...remember: if you want gorgeous graphics, play a shooter...andf the controls can be shirtcut by keys all...

garret: no i wont play shooters, because they are boring.
please dont generalize here.
there is "rpg-ok"-graphics, "state of the art"-graphics, and there is poor graphics.

ok i havnt seen that much of lionheart, but the forest backgrounds seems to be very washed out and uglier than the backgrounds in bg for example. (where as bg had really nice graphics for its time)
But i dont understand the backstep in quality with a simultaneous advancement of time.

and i really dont like the combat system. but this is a matter of taste of course.

also this "collect this red glowing sphere and that blue one too" doesnt help the game...

what i liked is the character generation system (complex, together with some new influences) , and the skill tree... but especially the latter is nothing new

What is going on?!

How did the people responsible for Fallout do *this*?!
ARGH! I wanted to like this! Love the SPECIAL system, and the story sounds very nice... but they seriously screwed up...

- Crap graphics (and I thought Fallout was nice enough)
- HORRIBLE inventory
- Level-up skill points cannot be removed - no "accept" button
- Bland magic effects
- The combat interface... why?!? You can't target from pause, making hitting a moving target virtually impossible with spells, and in close quarters combat the damn enemies OVERLAP so you can't target them specifically...

Jeeesus... I really expected a lot from this... e.g. playability...

So essentially: Diablo with crap graphics, lousy inventory, poorly executed level-ups and a combat system to make you want to go play on the freeway.

Dammit.

Well I played the demo from beginning to end and I don't think I missed anything.I like it alot and will be buying the game once its released.People that know me from these boards will know I am not easily impressed and rarely do I go over-board in my judgement of a rpg.The graphics are not "state of the art" but I want story,not eye-candy.If all I wanted was "great graphics",I"d play AC2.That said,I think the graphics are one hell of alot better than what some are criticizing here.Some people will love this game and some will hate it.I,for one,think it is a better than good rpg which will give me many hours of enjoyment.

I loved the character generation system but the real time combat sucks.

Of course this is a demo and it is very hard to do a good rpg demo so i will wait for a honest review from a small site but right now all i can say is that i am negative about buying .

However this may change if the review of the final game says how poor the demo was compared to the final game or something like that.
