Ricky is right. It often happens that winches only work the first time you touch them. So keep your hands off until you really want to use them.

This topic has now come round in a full circle, there are no bugs or freezes on
any winch in gothic, if you try to use a winch which is untriggered by the storyline, (it is not ready to be used) then it will remain unusable and this can only be found out by "using" it. A STORYLINE UNUSABLE WINCH IS NOT A JAMMED WINCH.

I think the problem most players are having is caused by hitting the Ctrl and up arrow too quickly in succession. For some reason, you have to allow a short pause between keys. I had done everything I needed to, but the winch would freeze every time. I used the cheat to enter, but later discovered that if I allowed a one second pause between keys it would work. Be sure to save before trying, because if it does freeze, you don't get a second chance. The timing between the keys didn't seem to matter elsewhere in the game.

You mean, a pause long enough to allow the character to "get into the right position", or rather - complete the animation? This sounds interesting to me...

Welcome, btw.

Thats the way I did it and worked fine for me too.

hwfanatic, you may be right about allowing the animation to complete. When you climb the ladders, there is also an animation, but you can hit the two keys at the same time and it will still work.

Is there a cheat to get my 1500 experience points I lost when I used the cheat before talking to Asghan? It took me a while to figure out which keys to use since the German keyboard switches the y and z and the underline is ?.

I am really enjoying Gothic though I came to it late. It reminds me a bit of Outcast, which I loved. I do have Gothic 2 waiting.

Enjoy the game with out cheats! So my sujestion is to load a previus saved game and try again the "gather 2-3 templers to protect me when the gate is opened" task.

You mean it took you a while trying to understand how to insert cheats cause
the controls of the game dont require the "y" and "z" keys.

Once again try the game with out cheats or you will end up to miss a lot and be rather confused how the game procides and "works" if you think that the solution of it hides always behind a cheat.By the way by using marvin mode
you rise the chances of the game to crash over windows or "give" you an Access Violation Error.

I haven't been using cheats. I only used one when it was impossible to continue the game when the gate wouldn't open. The experience points were ones I had won fairly, but didn't get. I now need a lot of points to become a guard and will have to spend much time killing animals I shouldn't have to. I was hoping to avoid that.

Some of the keys on the German keyboard, which is effectively what you are using even in the US version, are different from what I am used to. I had to try a lot of keys before I found the ones I needed to type in the code.
