Guild affiliations help

I just started the game, only day 11 in game. I have read the posts and found a little contradiction in opinions on joining the theifs guild and the fighters guild. It was not talked about in detail and I really don't want to mess up. I am in fighters and mage and temple, and I just joined theives. Should I reload and leave the theives guild off the list. I hate messing up and not knowing until way later. Any ideas are appreciated to help me decide what to do. Thanks.

There's a quest the Balmora fighter's guild will have you do that will upset the thieves' guild. You can certainly join any and all guilds, but that quest (3rd one you get, IIRC) will force you to choose whose good graces you want to stay in.

Thia thing about guilds is VERY cool. You can join all the guilds, than finish all the quests for the Thieves guild, then do that quest (@ dteowner: it can be the third or the fourth of the fifth quest... it isn't always the same as you can take quests in other towns) that orders you to steal the codebook, then complete all the Fighters' guikd quests. Also I recommend you to join the Imperial cult: It's quests are cool, and you get free healing then.

Thanks

Thanks for the info. That's what I needed to know. I haven't found the imperial cult yet, but I'm moving slow and checking out the world, and dying a few times as well. I may just save theifs for later and do some of the stuff I already got jobs for. Then come back to it. If I just don't do the quests for the thieves, I can still be in it later right? Thanks again.

Not if you do the quests for the Fighter's Guild that turn the Thieves against you - that's the problem.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. There are lots of guilds/factions/clans/houses to join, but you can never join them all - you probably won't even realise half of them exist! Join what you can and do their quests, and if another guild doesn't like your affiliation with their enemy and refuses to deal with you - so what? Save that guild for a different character.

If you want to experience the whole game you'll need to play at least three characters, as you can only join one of the three Dunmer Great Houses with a single character - you can't even join a different one by getting kicked out. That's just one example of a conflict - there are others.

Thanks Again

The more I get into this game the more I realize how much more complex I can make it if I want to. Never played one that took this much brain work on character creation and building. Different in depth than Gothic was I think. I can see this is going to be a long game and I may need to make notes. Speaking of which, can I add stuff to the Journal myself? I haven't read all the spec. of the game, so thougt I'd ask.

@cmc:
No, you can't add anything to your journal. But if you need anything you can query it from your journal, as everything you hear gets to your journal.

@cmfdobbie:
If you are so experienced, than how can I join the twin lamps????? And about the houses, they are not very different, and you can do quests for other houses even if you are not in. Unfortunately, not all the quests.

While you can do things for the Twin Lamps (freeing slaves etc), you can't join them with rank and privileges - not in the base game anyway. Someone wrote a plugin that allows you to join them, but I've not personally tried it.

Do you know where to get that plugin? I personally tried to this (create a similar plugin), but I wasn't successful,so I'd like to get it...
