I know I read a post like this before, but I can't seem to find it again. Anyway, if I wanted to play games as much like gothic as possible, what other games are like this? I know I heard that ultima 9 is like this, but i'm looking for a lot of titles. I can't get enough of this type of RPG, getting away from the montonous Baldur's gate type view and setting that has been copied and used so much lately. Looking for games with no linear plot, or no plot at all, or that have the same type of 3d view from behind, or a bit of the action rpg like gothic. Any suggestions?

Yes, but Thief III looks very nice! I'm looking forward to that one!

If your computer can run older DOS games and you can put up with dated graphics.

Daggerfall
Redguard

Morrowind is schedu led to be released in 3 months. It should be even better than Gothic.

One I liked was Summoner. The combat was somewhat limited, but I really liked that game! I also liked Rune.

Outcast is very good and gave me a similar experience as Gothic. Daggerfall and Red Guard does also have elements similar to Gothic.

Take my word: DON'T PLAY OUTCAST

I heard it was huge and immersive like Gothic, so I gave it a try.

So I started my first game, took one look at the screen, and let out an ear-shattering scream.

Voxels.

I just came from looking at the great graphics of Gothic, and compared to them, the graphics in Outcast are ATROCIOUS.

Outcast is rendered in voxels, not polygons. This means the graphics look like CRAP.

I had read reviews of Outcast and prepared myself for graphics that were worse than those of Gothic, but not THIS much worse.

Enemies are a blur until they get up close, stairs have a blocky and ugly appearance, and on the whole Outcast looks like crap.

I don't care how good people say the game is in other areas; I simply COULD NOT get past the terrible graphics of Outcast. This was made ten times worse by the fact that I had just quit playing Gothic, in all its visual glory.

I had started a new game of Gothic within twenty minutes of playing Outcast.

So DON'T BUY OUTCAST. You'll probably have to mail order it like me, and this game just isn't worth the expense.

Good graphics don't make a game, but there is another edge to this sword:

Bad graphics can sure as hell BREAK a game.

If you still have Outcast on your HDD try the lowest quality graphics setting. I heard this is best (bug!).

Immersive games (even though not RPGs): Thief 1 and 2 were mentioned. Great. great, great. Just like Deus Ex later was (Spector all of them). Planescape Torment falls into the category 'immersive' as well, even though it's an Infinity engine game.

Games with lots of freedom of action for the player:
Daggerfall and Redguard were mentioned - true. Redguard even has graphical simlarities to Gothic, but: both Daggerfall and Redguard are pretty buggy.

If you like to suffer a lot of mental anguish just like in Gothic , you might also give Torment a try.

Fallout 2. It has a Baldur's Gate View and the graphics are lacking but other then that it is a bad game. (the good bad, Not the bad, bad)

I really enjoyed Outcast. Presumably voxels are too much for some people in the same way limited mouse support is for others...

If you fancy a more SF setting, Nomad Soul is an over the shoulder action-adventure, which I also enjoyed a lot. A bit non-linear, and nice (polygonal) city-scapes. And no bugs

Fallout 1 & 2 are still my fav games ever. Deus Ex is up there too. Gothic is sweet aswell, but I like a little more NPC realization, rather than the generic ones that say the same thing and don't realize when you've done something.

Alistair...Nomad soul as in Omikron...?
I've always wondered what it is about...I mean, how mature is the setting, how degraded is it (meaning atmosphere) and what is the general goal of it?
I've seen some reviews, but never really gotten a feeling of what it really is...(Adventure I guess...?)
