Thanks, I didn't realize for a moment that one was for Normal and the other for Critical.

It all seems to make sense now. I can see the reasoning behind using Str rather than Dex to calculate Normal Damage.
This method encourages the investment into a Melee attribute and makes it more difficult to concentrate on Ranged combat early in the game.
Ranged skills make it too easy to take on enemies that would normally be too Advanced to engage.
