These controlls are terrible :(

I've been playing the game for about ten hours now and I still can't get use to them. I have no ides how much stuff I've left behind because I got tired of fighting the control scheme.

Is there any hacks out there that fixes the control scheme in the game so you don't need a 3rd hand to play?

If you don't like your current keyboard setting, try the alternative one, or set up a custom one. I use the mouse and the w, a, d, s keys for control, and I got used to it.

The controls are very fast when you got used to them. As the readme suggests, use ASDW + mouse if you are right-handed. This is the standard FPS setup with the small difference that you press -and keep pressed- the LMB (whenever the manual says ctrl / "action key" ) to indicate you want to manipulate an object or take an action and then use the movement keys, here ASDW, to execute your action. In 95% of the cases itīs simply LMB + forward!
So if you want to pick something up, equip or unequip, talk, attack_with_a_step_forward, shoot an arrow or spell, press a button, etc. just look at him or it and press LMB + forward. Absolutely trivial even with only two hands.
Unfortunately the manual is a POS. The controls are badly communicated.

For inventory, trading, weapon + spell handling and combat strategies you should have a look at the FAQ on GothicDot.
In short, chose an item, keep the LMB pressed and use directional keys (cursor, strafe, turn do make a difference!) to move certain amounts of your stock to the side you want.

to tell you the truth, i switched to the ASWD setting and NEVER touched the mouse ONCE and beat the game, soooo great... i love a game where you dont need the mouse but it still has to work good...

I kept the controls as they were. I never changed them and found them to be fine.

A little addition

Right mouse button is jump....and it also doubles as "back out" of menus.
I just got the game and found the controls a bit odd...and the manual very weak...but wow! This game looks deep! (so far) I will try the ASWD remapping as I am used to that from FPS. Over-all the controls are different but not bad enough to hinder game play....and the learning curve is steep...I like that.

I've played gothic without a mouse and with the standard keyboard settings. Well, i liked it(with exception of the awkward inventory which i found way to slow to handle) -- Remembered me to good ol' Doom times.

I found the inventory system to be very bad until I found out that you can move more than 1 item at once.

I don't really like the inventory system. It takes a long time to find an item if you have a lot of things.

I just get rid of all the stuff I don't need or put them in chests. For example the only weapons I have now are Uriziel, Innos Rage, Scars sword, Crossbow of War and BowofDeath.

Have I tell you that I'm a treasure collector? Well, most of the stuffs are not treasure... But anyway, I still hope the inventory system would be improved in Gothic 2, just a bit.

I'm more of a practical person, only carry what I need. Anyway I think it lags more if you have heaps of stuff in your inventory.

I never changed the controls and found them very nice after a while
[ I focused on the story not the controls ] but I hate one thing
about the inventory - every single weapon [ of the same type ]
has its own icon in the inventory... sometimes I had to scroll down the inventory for a minute to get to the end..[ tons of swords..]
I know two or three chests in the game in which there are couple weapons of the same type in one blessed icon..

When I frist started the game I changed the defult controls to WADS. The game is getting a bit easier, I'm finding myself to have to stop and thing about how to do something less and less.

Thanks everyone for allowing me to vent without any flames in return.
