Research CRPG fans

Hello people,

First post on the board and already I am asking for help.
I am a Game Design student and I am doing a target group research. The target group is the CRPG fan.
The idea for the project I have to do is to design the most annoying interface(in my case a CRPG) you can imagine.
By doing this research I can find out what you guys do and know and then use this information to make the most annoying game as possible.

So invite you all to fill out the inquiry at this site:
http://www.crpg-inquiry.tk/

And if you have any comments and ideas please let me know.

Regards,

Octopus

I can understand why you would want to research some of the worst interfaces but why would you then want to create an "annoying" game based on this information?

That form sure didnt fit in with the projects goals.

Looks more like someone trying to get free market research to me...

What is the point in wasting time and effort in actually creating a game with an annoying interface??

Why not find out what is annoying.....dont do it.....and spend your efforts on creating a game with a friendly interface.

Being a QA Manager, I can understand that finding out how NOT to do something has merit, but then actually doing it !!.....sheesh...

Regards,

Hex

I didn't meant any offense with this research but my intentions are genuine. It's a school project and the idea is to use the information you have acquired and to turn it around for a change. By conscious doing what is wrong you can learn what is right.

If you think the form doesn't cover what our goals are please do give me feedback on what questions we should ask.

Kind regards,

Octopus

I dont think you offended anyone. Just confused/dumbfounded them...

Looks like the site is down. Get it back up and I will take another look.

Basically it wasnt asking the right questions. It seemed like you were trying to find out what people liked rather than what they didnt like.

Yes I realised my mistake when I reviewed the questions again. I also added questions which are asking about the worst games. The site is down and we don't know when it will be up.
So we moved it to here:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/dunhilll/form/forms/form1.html

When you send it you get a blank screen, then you will know it has been sent. Our tech guy only moved the form itself and not the other pages.

Thank you for the feedback,

Octopus

What is your age
What is your gender
What is your occupation
What is your nationality
How many hours a week do you spent playing CRPG
Which CRPG have you played recently
What is your top 5 CRPG of all time
In what amount do you find yourself knowledgeable concerning background and storyline of the top 5 games you listed
Which game do you know the most of concerning background and storyline
Does playing CRPG affect your real life in any way
If so in what way would that be
Do you know people who play CRPGs Yes
If so what kind of games do they play
Do you play Pen and Paper RPGs Yes
If so which ones
How many hours do you spend playing Pen and Paper RPGs

I would remove these. They are not relevant to the stated goals of your project.

Which CRPG system did you find worked best and why

These type of questions are way too open, and dont really request the answers you want. If people tell you what they like, you will still have to come up with things they dont like yourself. I would remove these also.

Which genre of CRPG do you like the best

I would change this and ask which genres they dont like and exactly why they dont like them. (You should get a lot of useful info on how to make your game terrible.)

What is your top 5 of worst CRPG of all time

This would be covered by the above question.

Do you play CRPG online offline or both Online

Also ask why they prefer one over the other. (Again this should provide a lot of useful info)

Which CRPG system did you find worked worst and why

This is fine.

What kind of character do you like to play
In which game have you enjoyed playing that character the best

I would combine these and change it to something like:

"Using your favourite character, please give an example of a game that restricted you from roleplaying this particular character properly."

Which NPC did you find the most memorable and why and from which game

You should ask which NPC was the most annoying/uninteresting etc.

A few other ones you might want to use:

"Please describe your ideal CRPG" (Then you do the complete opposite)
"Which game has the worst spell system and why?"
"Which game has the worst advancement system and why?"

I would also suggest changing most of your fields from one liners to a text box as most answers will require considerable space.

Also keep the questions as short and to the point as possible, and try to keep the form to about 10 questions. If people go there and see this huge questionaire, they arent going to fill it in.

"to make the most annoying game as possible"

Whoa! That almost sounds like you're a mad scientist who's trying to create some sort of doomsday device. I hope, for the safety of mankind, you're gonna destroy this "game" after your dangerous research is done.

Hi Octopus, I just filled out your survey and would like to ask you to make the results publicly available. Some questions seemed interesting, and by publicizing the results you'd prove everyone that your survey isn't really a marketing project and is not aimed at generating profit..

Hi, Octopus. I've also done research on interface usability. First, let me say that whatever applies to GUIs will apply to CRPG GUIs as well. Therefore, I suggest you start your research of what "can be done wrong in an interface" on the SGICHI site or even here. I'm sorry to say, but usability evaluation is an entirely subjective matter, and your questionarie only makes things worse. If you really want to make a decent research which can be taken seriously, then I urge you to create a few simple GUI prototypes, and have users test each of them. Then, after testing, elaborate a questionarie which will be answered by them. Based on these answers, you can better find out which interface elements are better. If possible, create the questionarie using a system like the Likert scale; it's better for statistical analysis.

Last, a word of advice: if you're doing this for college, don't assume that you will "learn what is right by doing what is wrong." Usability has been studied to death since the 1980s, and chances are that there are already several papers analysing games GUIs out there. Read them first, and learn from them.
