Danicek said: 'But what I see is that if something is developed for console or console and PC, it is usually visibly cripled by console possibilities.' Actually that's not strictly true. If you look at Arx Fatalis, for example, it came out on XBox over a year after the PC game had been around and during that time many 'bumps' were ironed out to make it smoother to play and it also looks better too, with more use of pixel shading.
Schattenherz said: 'RPGs are dying. The Companys won't invest in complicated Games with long Development-Time if they can make fast Cash with the casual Gamer, Console-Kids and the FPS-Crowd.' That's not exactly right either. Fable, for example, has been in development for a few years and that's going to be a high quality, high sales game. Sure, some game makers are churning out fast and flashy games but they're using the same game engine and not redesigning the wheel. Which's what's being done to the newer games, where they're giving more to the gamer than ever before - Neverwinter Nights, Morrowind and Arx Fatalis are a few that spring to mind as an example. RPGs will never die, they've been around as long as gaming has and they'll be here as long as they have a fan base. Ok, it's a small fan-base but we demand - and get - excellent quality games that stand up extremely well beside other popular mainstream games like Matrix, Grand Theft Auto 3 and Tekken 4. _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

If a company makes a good new CRPG game, it will probably have been in development for a few years, but after the initial succes (if it's a succes), more companies should be more aggressive, and release successor number 2 and 3 within the next 2 years, with the same engine, gameplay, interface etc. etc. but perhaps with new small tweaks here and there.Even the opponents could be more or less the same, the only major change should be the story. A little like NWC di with Might & Magic VI, VII, VIII, MM6 was the game that took a while to make MM7 and MM8 followed shortly with no major change except for story and gameworld of course, and they where excellent games too. MM7 turned into one of the best games ever IMHO, MM8 was not really bad, but had some game balance issues, which sadly left it in the medicore group.
But we should long ago have seen Wizardry 9 and 10 already, build on Wizardry 8 engine and concept, and if I did own (read: had the money) a game development company, I would have bought the rights to Wizardry 8 from the dying company, and gone for a quick release of Wiz 9 and 10. I think many people blindly buy successors to a good game, and especially in our branch, we are not all so keen after the newest tech all the time, "Gameplay" and "story" are our major interests here.
Other Examples on how it should be done.
Morrowind, Tribunal, Bloodmoon.
Neverwinter night, Add on 1 and 2 are already released
Heroes of M & M, had many add on's following shortly
I'm not talking about if you specific like the game or not, but about the way companies should make more faster money after have made a good game many people enjoy, I mean games like Gothic 3 and Arx 2 should already have been on the street, forget about the "proud" that it really should be a completely new game with new engine etc. etc. Example: Gothic 2 had a little add-on, but did only distribute it locally (Big mistake), even though it may seem like a small expansion (Read: small development cost) for the company, they should have gone for a WW release, many of us would have bought it anyway.
So to say it shortly: If a game hits the high numbers in sales, get successor 2 and 3 (New story only) out there shortly after (within 2 years) _________________ Moderator on RPGdot.com Forum.
