@Dhruin: Well, you can keep your opinion and I'll keep my pistol.

@Michael C: In my case the firearm prevented violence. It prevented a crime from being commited. My father didn't even have to fire one shot.

@MoonDragon: Thanks for the blanket and cocoa.

You're not giving my father half the credit he deserves. What gave him confidence? His experience and years of training. Not a gun. He is an ex-police officer. He has dealt with criminals for years. He knows what will intimidate them and what won't. Those men did not run until they saw the gun. They did not run until they knew they would lose the fight. He might have been able to take down two or three of them by himself but he is not as young as he used to be. In that scenario he could have been injured or possibly killed. The gun prevented that scenario from happening and I am eternally happy for it.

Btw, how many of the other statistics quoted here are loaded?

I'd much rather have my pistol then a beeper.
Scenario 1:
"Don't attack me, I have a beeper and I'm not afraid to use it!"
Nothing like giving the rapist a good laugh before he tries to rape and kill me.

Scenario 2:
*pulls gun and points it at mister would-be rapist's crotch*
*rapist flees in terror*

This may be redundant, but I caught myself thinking this a minute ago...

"Did you know that 100% of people shot by guns were shot by people/themselves/robots with guns? Ergo, if no one had guns... people wouldn't get shot..."

Just a thought... not as if it's ever going to happen.

The actuall statistic I stated earlier was incorrect. The correct one is that in englend it is 9 times more likely to be robed after daylight hours(when most people are at home sleeping) than in the US. This is the main point of allowing guns to be easely excesible(though I agree with light restrictions)
becouse if the criminal knows that there is a very high chance that the person that he may be about to commit a criminal act opon might have a gun, well then he might think twice then wouldnt he?

One story I heard recently was that a woman was looking through her trunk when a man came up to her and pushed her into it locked it. He drove to a socluded place (were he planned on doing watever you can possibly imagin to her) and opened the trunk door were he found a metal slug waiting for him. Story told she lived. So I ask you how are those statistics posted previously loaded? Frankly they seem very real to me.

American logic: "If I have a gun, I'll just scare off any rapists/criminals". Yeah sure. So the solution to all problems would be to give EVERYONE a gun and everyone would be afraid of each other and crime would stop. Great plan.

If a madman gets hold of an automatic rifle, he will be able to kill tens of people before he is stopped. If he gets hold of a knife he won't be able to kill as many people before someone stops him. Guns will always be around, as will madmen. The only way to limit the damage is to have strict weapon laws and as few weapons as possible in everyday society. (Which has been shown by countless scientific reports, by the way)

Wish someone would check how many crimes are being PREVENTED by guns as opposed to how many crimes are being COMMITTED using guns. Only a person with the mental capacity of a two year old would still want to keep their pistol then.

@Mattias: goofy goldfish already quoted you some statistics.

Btw, I'm tired of your spiteful behavior Mattias. I've tolerated it long enough. Simply because I'm a moderator does not mean you can attack me personally with impunity. Although I would never ban someone out of spite, I will ban someone for running around constantly insulting people. If you were constantly attacking other users then you would be gone by now. Well guess what, I'm also user and I don't have to take your constant string of insults. It's time someone showed you the door. Goodbye.

Pro-gun control here. Absolutely pro total gun control. Too many people shot their own kids with their guns by accident, which is just one of the reasons.
Btw, with an automatic weapon the ratio would be 1 dead to 14 wounded. Battlefield weapons are designed to wound and thus bind staff, not kill. It would be the other way around with a shotgun.

ok, since banning guns is just about as likely me taking over the Playboy Mansion and then becoming president, and "fingerprinting" guns is too much work/money I say that we take all the idiots, morons, ***-holes etc. brand all idiots with a large "I" on their forhead, an M on morons, and then make ***-holes have surgery so their faces look like ***es, so we would know who to blame for **** like that happening! you know, if you see someone with a I, M, AW, MF etc. on their forehead, YOU DON'T SELL THEM A GUN! that would save a lot of trouble!

ok, I came up with this thought (after hours of struggling to get my brain to work! ) here is what I came up with:

Let's use schools as an example, knives are not allowed because they are "deadly" well, shouldn't they take away forks and spoons too? now you are thinking that this has nothing to do with guns, well, SHUT UP! IT DOES! (no offense) think about it, it is the same arguement, except on a larger scale... I mean, someone could run up to you, take a spoon, scoop out your eyes, stab you with a fork, and then rob you blind (no pun intended)! guns are merely a tool, like a spoon or a fork, how they are used is up to the user! and a reason they don't ban guns is because it would be a remix of Prohibition! (read about it if you don't know what it is) besides this is AMERICA! it is an AMERICAN RITE TO BEAR ARMS... meaning rifles, pistols... etc. so keep your handgun Val! we're shootin' the robbers oh, and FYI I keep one handgun and two throwing knives but my bed, you break in, you get a knyfe in the groin and the arm, then a bullet to the head. I don't care what you say, it is self defense!

@Black Fang, why don't you come up with something half-decent to say? Like I already said before in this thread, if you start over-simplifying it that way, I'll go the other: while we are demanding the right for everyone to own a gun, why don't we demand the right to own tanks and nukes and strike fighters, they are only tools as well! Guns are made with the intention to kill or harm, spoons are made for different purposes.

Have fun shooting your significant other as self-defense, not to mention the knives in her groin and arm...
