Am I screwed?

I completed the game once, and I'm doing a second run now. This time I figured I wanted to create a really powerful character before even starting the main story, so I was lvl 31 when I reached Kvatch.

Now, my problem is this - the enemies in Kvatch are all the same lvl as me(due to the global lvl up thing), so I meet Deadroths, Xivillis(or whatever, big grey fellows), Deadric Spiders and so on, while the guards that are supposed to help me get whacked in a few hits by the uber lvl enemies(for some reason, guards don't lvl up, and even if they do - they still have the same crap gear).

So my question is this - am I screwed? Is there any way to reset the levels, increase level of the guards, or otherwise alter the events at Kvatch? Bypass it? The guards die almost instantly, and as I go out of the underground passage in the church I am standing face-to-face, completely alone, with 2 Xivili-whatevers, 2 Deadric Spiders, 2 Deadroths and 1 Deadric mage-summoner-fellow-in-black-robe(whatever their name is). Needless to say, I can't possibly beat that, and the guards all die already in underground passage(almost instantly). As a fighter type I might have had a chance(kill 1, run away etc), but as a mage I have next-to-no burst damage, and rely on my summoned creatures to wear my enemies down(Destruction magic at lvl 30+ is nearly pointless, enemies have such insane amount of hitpoints).

I'd appreciate any suggestions, maybe mods that can alter it, because as it looks right now, the global lvl up thing has really screwed me over simply because I wanted to try making a powerful character before doing the main quest.

Oh, by the way lads - heed my advice, do the main quest as early as possible, the longer you wait, the harder it gets, as whoever is supposed to help you do not get better gear etc, but the enemy certainly does. If you do it at lvl 1 you'll cruise through it, while at lvl 30 it's completely impossible. Ironic isn't it?

Difficulty Slider

You can use the difficulty slider to make it easier. That's what I had to do for that mission and I was only lvl 11.

It's in the Gameplay options.

I'm not completely sure, but I think that you have to start a new game for mods changing levels to work.

I stuggled at lvl 8, so I sympathise. As Gabboflabbo suggested, I'd hit the difficulty slider. If I play again, I'm thinking of using Auryn's level mod but I'm sure Odex is right - you need to start a new game for those.

The first time I completed the game, I was lvl 10-12 or so in Kvatch, and that was hard enough, but this can't even be compared to it, it's insane.. I'm afraid only cheating can help me out, as mods won't take affect at this point. Maybe there is some way of resetting levels or adding guards through editing I don't know of though.

I honestly think my game is ruined really, unless I find some way to bypass it - I can easily do the solo parts of the game, but anything requireing assistance is really hard as whatever assistance you get at that lvl is worth nothing compared to the high lvl enemies you face.

Yeah you wanna hit Kvatch in lv 10 or under, im heavy metal so it aint so bad for me, but i can see it being a total nightmare for a ranger or caster. I would definitely suggest hitting it at level 5 or so for them.

Spoiler alert:
----------------------
I managed to bypass it - the liberation of Kvatch is actually just a side-quest after Martin has been freed. I just had to go back to the camp, talk to him, and get him to follow me. I still haven't completed Kvatch, and I probably never will - it's just too hard at such a high level.

I happened upon Kvatch at around level 8. I wasnt looking for it, just had all those people running for their lives coming by me.

The Gate itself was a ton of fun - but clearing the city afterwards just plain sucked. Worst part of the game really. It exposes Oblivion's biggest flaw - dirt stupid NPC combat tactics. Unless dying is a tactic? They dive in, activate every creature they can see and then simply die. That leaves you with the baggage. It took me about 10 reloads to get a "favorable" scenario after all the suicidal NPC's bit the farm - but I still had no less than 6 creatures to somehow kill. Lots of running away to gain advantage - something the NPC's never seem to consider unless they are fighting YOU.

I completed it but I certainly won't be taking volunteers again. To boot, I ended up with a 1000 septim bounty since I somehow managed to cut down some schmuck who got in my way.

The liberation of Kvatch was sort of clumsy for me at lvl 12ish as well.

Playing an Agent with all ranged attacks and mostly Light Armor I was fighting Clannfear, Flame Atronochs, Scamps and the odd Daedra Kunval.

#####WARNING>>>SPOILAGE AHEAD#####

It takes A LOT of arrows to kill anything that is level 10 or better so I was doing a lot of kite killing once I got into the castle.

After all the NPC's died I looted the key and simply used Sneak to get to the tunnel. I had to kill a couple baddies just before the guard tower but it was manageable.

The area right after opening the gate to the castle was a real pain and glitchy. The Guard Captain kept getting knocked unconscious by the slew of enemies there and the rest of his men died very quickly upon engaging the enemies. It was odd...the Guard Captain was suspended in mid air...he would get knocked out, regain consciousness, get knocked out, regain consciousness, etc. until I had cleared all of the mobs.

The Castle was filled with Flame Atronochs but I was able to kill them one at a time, at huge expense to my quiver of Silver Arrows. Not much of interest in the wreckage inside the Castle although I did manage to find a skill-up tome in one of the book piles.

The Dukes room was inhabited by a Daedroth who killed me very quickly the first time I encountered him...after F9 I simply used Sneak to get past him and finish the quest.

#####END SPOILAGE#####

My character is level 22 now and I'm fighting Storm Atronochs, Daedric Spiders and the like in Oblivion and a mixed bag of mobs just about anywhere else.

To me, the TES games were always about maxxing all skills and stats, equipping yourself with the most powerful artifacts available in the game world in order to become an unstoppable force for change in Tamriel.

I'm going to try and do this with my character in Oblivion too but if the higher end game is as unbalanced as everyone says it is...I may be having to wait for a patch to accomplish this...who knows, perhaps the tools to adequately deal with the scaling system are present in the game world and noone has yet to put them all together. After all, it is a TES game and there are bound to be many secrets leading to great power...

There again I might just be waiting for an official patch or loading a custom mod to circumvent a poorly contrived scaling system.

Laters,

HoLo

It's definitely something you should do easrly in the game. After that, I haven't revisited the main quest at all!! Guess I should consider it, but there's really no great motivation to do so!!

Indeed, the motivation is rather weak. Still, I consider it stronger than in Morrowind.

I suspected the actual city-clearing aspect of the Kvatch business was optional, but wasnt sure. I didnt even consider going that route tho, some things a cat just feels he must do. But it's certainly good news for those beleagured by the insane difficulty, it's the hardest battle Ive been in yet. I was level 7 or so when I did it, and barely made it by the skin of my teeth, and I'm heavy armor and high-damage claymore, drawing them one by one and using every spell/potion/repair hammer, etc at my disposal.. I actually had to start grabbing weapons off the fallen and using them, it was at once terrible, and terribly humbling!

If I had it to do over again, I'd hit it ASAP.

My first "serious" character (a Morrowind inspired agile and sneaky Dunmer wannabe assassin) postponed Kvatch until level 17 or so and the critters utterly owned him. He was no game at all and since I erroneously played that role for one or two seconds too long in real life, I prefered to eject myself from this unfavory situation.

So my next character was a combat focused Breton and I put her to Kvatch straight after the sewers, at level one. Needless to say, she did very well. I kept her tight on the main quest to avoid further toe-to-toe surprises and so far (at L22) she largely owns the game. She bought a house or two, did some side questing, some free-style exploring, but she's tight on the main quest, while leveling on combat skills only, obviously. She may or may not roleplay to her greater liking later, after retirement.

Somehow, this RPG does not feel like fantasy at all.
