I dunno what lvl is a good lvl. But just follow the steps that game gives you. If you wont go off story line your lvl will be reasonably high.

It doesn't really matter

the first i played, i started ch 2 at lvl 5(necessary for shadow/rogue/novice), at the end of ch 2 i had lvl 8 and then killed some more animals/completed quests till i had lvl 10 (necessary for guard/magician/templar etc.) i then joined the guards and completed ch 3 without any major problems (of course the game has some dificulty)

the second time, i became a magician and had the levels like the first time

conclusion --- the level isn't that important, the armor and weapons and brains count the most, new levels bringing only a little more life (+12 HP per level) and 10 new skill points (don't spend them on hunting, its very easy without if you profit at the start from the sword making bug)

Most of us played Gothic years ago. Maybe you should dig out a few older threads. I bet this has been discussed more then once.
