I'm thinking of setting up a poll thread for our favourite RPGs, but rather than chuck a load of my own choices into the poll, I think it'd be better if i gathered suggestions here first. A game will be considered for inclusion in the poll based on the amount of users that request it.

I also need to decide on whether to group certain games together; for example, I'd say both Ultima Underworlds should count as one choice, since they are so similar and neither game has major strengths/weaknesses compared to the other, but I wouldn't say the same for System Shock 1 and 2. Perhaps BG 1 and 2 should be grouped together? Fallout 1 and 2? What do you think?

Finally, restrictions. We should stick to PC RPGs, not including MMORPGs. No age restrictions. We also need to settle on how broad our definition of RPG will be. This must be settled by consensus, but I have a feeling it's going to have to be pretty broad to accommodate everyone's opinions.
Does anyone know the maximum number of options a poll will allow? Because that will obviously be a factor, and may influence the aforementioned grouping of games (to keep the numbers down).

Anyway, let me know what you think. I'll get the ball rolling with my nominations (in no particular order):

Ultima Underworld 1&2
Deus Ex
Planescape Torment

If our agreed definition is broad enough, I'd also like to include the original System Shock, and maybe one or both of the Thief games.
Let me know your suggestions (and of course, let me know if you think this is a complete waste of time )... you can nominate as many games as you like, just try to restrict it to those you consider the "best of the best" - not just every RPG you like, but the absolute top dogs.

Well just because it got more nominations I went and got planescape torment.

I already like it more than baldurs gate and icewind dale, just because the main character is large not a little mario world guy.

One day when I have heaps of spare time, I'm going to sit down and play PS-T for the third time. How can you not love Nordern and Annah!!

I find it pretty hard to narrow it down to three games... I guess the BG series would make it, and I'd probably find some space for Deus Ex.

Am I the only one who wasn't impressed by PS:T? Never did like the story or the graphics (big cardboard figures). The setting was cool though...

Nice one guys, the list is growing nicely... spread the word!
I forgot to mention in my last post, I know there's already a top 100 on the site, but since the rankings are worked out in a completely different way, I reckon this poll might return some strikingly different results. Well, there's only one way to find out.

[edit]: I've edited the top post to show the nominations so far. I'll update it as and when. I haven't grouped any titles together yet, and I am keeping track of how many nominations each game has had (just in case some "weeding out" is necessary ). Anyone know the maximum number of poll options we can have?

Okay my nominations (in no particular order):

1. M&M 6
2. M&M 7
3. Anvil of Dawn
4. NWN - because of the mods and multiplayer aspect
5. Ultima V
6. Gothic
7. Morrowind
8. Divine Divinety
9. Fallout
10. Darklands

This is today's list. I am sure I've left off *at least* one game that belongs there.

Actually, there are 10 types of people; those who understand binary, and those who don't!!

Well, Clint says there are only two types of people... "those with loaded guns, and those who dig..."

Hmmm... now I think about it, Clint seems to be over-generalising a bit there... uh... and it won't make any sense at all to anyone who hasn't seen The Good, The Bad & The Ugly, so err... forget I mentioned it

Thank you. That's the first mention for DD. I'll add it to the list.

No, I had it as #10. Doesn't that count?

PS - It was very hard keeping the list to 10. Dragon Islands did not make it, nor did Ultima 7 nor Fallout 2.
