WoW: Selling In-Game Services @ Terra Nova |

Terra Nova is hosting a rather interesting <a href="http://terranova.blogs.com/terra_nova/2005/11/goods_and_servi.html#more" target="_blank">discussion</a> about the lack of an active market for services in World of Warcraft.<blockquote><em>In looking at the economics of WoW, I've been struck by the absence of a market for services. It is interesting how many WoW players are first time MMOG players. Blizzard succeeded in tapping that golden demographic.
It is also alarming that a website called "Terra Nova: Exploring Virtual Worlds" has as one of its featured authors someone who has NOT played any other virtual world except WoW...
Anyway. There are no built in service systems in any MMOG that I have played including Everquest, Dark Age of Camelot, Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, Star Wars Galaxies, Everquest 2, Horizons and others. You basically have to use a world chat function to get an item imbued, enchanted or its equivalent.
It may also come as a surprise to the above author that built in vendors are also fairly new. East Commlands Tunnel anyone? (UO is a notable exception) |

I would be against such a system because it would kill the "community aspect" imo. Being a doctor in SWG and waiting in front of starports to buff people may be boring for other people but I loved meeting new people that way.
While markets (be it for items or services) are very convenient, they also reduce players interaction : you deal with an interface, not with other peoples directly.
I'd be interested in an in-game "ad board" at best for services, where people would write messages like "300 Enchanter open for service every day from 7 to 8 GMT at Iron Forge in front of the King's Siege", those ad boards should be placed next to every mail box in the world so that you can immediately and conveniently send an email to the maker of the ad for more info.
There should also be a system with it to report "bad ads" where if 5 or 10 players report the same ad as bad, it is automatically deleted. The ad should also last no more than a week.
The key is that players still have to meet, to interact, to play as a community. While I enjoy how convenient the SWG Bazaar or the WoW Goods Market are I don't like not dealing and chatting and discussing the price directly with players (skilled talkers often end up with very good prices, I know what I'm talking about :p ). _________________ Retired Editor @ RPGDot
