How to speed up the game?

I have a pentium 3 500, with 256mb ram and a riva tnt2 32mb. i play the game at 800*600 at minimum detail, but even that way, the game sometimes runs very slowly. Any tips to speed thing up? Does taking off the music ot installing a new patch (if it doesnt corrupt save games) help it?

Definitely install the patch. However, I have an AMD 1.4 and the game ran very fast and smooth for me. Therefore, it would seem something else is causing the slowdown. Possibly the sound card. You should have a fast game even at higher res. Mine was certainly higher than yours. Some of the more technical people can probably help you more.
