The "jammed gate" is not part of the quest. In fact, it's a quest bug.

Best solution:

-hit the key to get your character stats
-type the word marvin
-hit the same key you used to get your character stats to exit the stat screen
-stand at the gate
-hit the K key

This doesn't work very well on upward slopes though

Gates are very buggy in Gothic. Had to use this trick twice.

What jammed gate?

The gearwheel is for a ore smasher, not a gate. You'll use the gearwheel later in the story.

I was cought by this bug myself. Luckily I had a save just before I talked to the gatekeeper...
There is a slight chance he doesnt open the gate before he tells you its time.

Best Regards

The same thing happened to me, fortunately I saved right before the attempt. It appears you only have one chance to open it. If you step up to it and don't follow through completely then it won't work any more.
