Gothic II won't load

Hi there. I just got a new computer,

ATI Radeon 9250 AGP8x 128MB DDR
AMD Socket939 Athlon 64 3000+(1.8GHz)
ASUS MOTHERBOARD A8V K8T800PRO Socket939 HT1000
1024MB DDR 3200 DUAL CHANNEL cl3

I went trough Gothic 2 on my old Dell Inspiron 4100 without a single crash- well, with minimum video settings too...

Now, I installed the game on my new computer- and it either crashes while I'm loading New Game, or when I finally managed to load and save a game, it won't let me play for more that a few minutes- the game just suddenly crashes and returns me to a desctop- with no error message.

I tested memory- it is fine... I saw some forums online that mentioned that Gothic 2 has problems with ATI cards and, specifically, with newer Catalyst- is it true?

Thanks awfully

Hi!

G2 indeed has problems with certain new graphics cards and new driver versions. In that case the game wouldnīt load correctly, though. It either wouldnīt start at all or leave out vital elements like dialog boxes, menu, clouds, etc. . Something you would notice in a split second.

Since you mentioned your PC is new - the problem could be everywhere. G2 puts heavy load on memory and CPU. Itīs possible your RAM is not 100% okay or at least not perfectly compatible to your mainboard. Itīs also not unlikely you could have a heat problem. This is easy to troubleshoot: Open your case and play the game. If the crash takes longer you know whatīs going on.

You should use the forum search. I think G2 especially has problems with Radeon 9000-9250 cards. (Or vice versa - ATIīs driver team doesnīt have a good reputation.)

On a sidenote, a Radeon 9250 is an office card. Itīs definitely too slow for a gamer PC. I wouldnīt be surprised to find out every 150 EUR card is 10 times as fast in graphics-heavy games.

No, the game crashes just the same with the case open- and the memory test gives me no errors...

What card would you recommend- seeing that I'm unwilling to spend too much money (I hardly ever play games- G2 is an exception, the first game I've played since Fallout 2) Obviously, I'm looking forward to GIII...
Also, I only have an AGP slot on my motherboard- so, no PCI express for me...
Thank you all in advance!

Not good. Then we still donīt know whether the graphics card is the problem or something else.
The recommended driver is Cat3.9, if you want to try a rollback. G2 also doesnīt really like DirectX9c ... but I think another forum member wasnīt able to solve his problems with a similar card although he tried just about everything. Check the last 10 threads or so.

I would suggest you open a thread in the G3 forum to collect opinions. It has more traffic than Troubleshooting.

My suggestion - please note that I canīt guarantee this will make G2 compatible with your PC:
G2 doesnīt need graphics power. A simple GeForce 2 Ti is okay. Your card is also fast enough for G2. Getting a GeForce 4 Ti AGP 8x from ebay for a few bucks could be an option. The new cards wonīt get more expensive until G3 arrives.
G3 needs a decent DirectX9 card. This means GeForce 6600 GT, Radeon 9700 or better for solid performance, at least thatīs what the infos say so far. A rough overview over the latest AGP cards can be found on THG. Two friends of mine are happy with their GeForce 6600 GT / 6800 SE cards with _passive_ cooling. Theyīre quite fast and are absolutely silent. I heard nVidia fixed the driver issues relevant for G2. This may or may not be true.
