UK people, the cheapest HL2 I've found is at an online store called MX2.co.uk, for £26.45 including p&p (that's postage & packing, not pen & paper!  ). According to the listing, it's a DVD-ROM that includes CounterStrike: Source. Never heard of MX2 before, can't vouch for their reliability, but I'm acting as guinea-pig and have just ordered, so I'll let you know if they keep my money and never send me anything.
Popped into my local Game on my way to work, after checking out that link that Wulf gave... five quid more expensive! What a cheek, eh? I thought these big chains would have the same pricing all over the country, but I guess not. And they don't sell Edge any more. Pah!  |

Half life 2 best fps game ever . I have had no problems at all. Took 20 min's to install. Doom was good nothing compared to half life 2. It cost me 32.99. from game.Bust buy ever. Mind you i am 53 years old, so younger ones might think otherwise |

No installation problems for me, and it runs pretty nicely on 'my' rig - currently an Athlon 3000 with 1 Gig of RAM and an old Radeon 9600. The video card is the bottleneck, of course, but running it with a resolution of 1024x786 and everything but anti-aliasing maxed out poses not the least problem. Sometimes a lengthy development process seems to minimize resources... 
Oh yes, and Barney sounds exactly like my ex  . But he always did that, did he now.

Half-Life2 seems to have well optimalized enigne. Well, I should buy new PC anyway. I suppose I havn't got a chance with my 800 Mhz, 256 SDRAM, Ti4200... |

My system same level as the recommended system: 2.4 Mhz, 512 RAm and ATI 9600. Game run good overall with minor slow down (when looking at water).

Actually, I didn't read the whole thread, but I can say I got HL2 for free with my graphics card, so I preloaded it a while ago, unlocked the same day it was released, everything went smoothm except that it was hard to log in to Steam. Well, then I started playing, and god, this game is BEAUTIFUL! I have a pretty good computer (Athlon 64 3500+, 1GB RAM, Radeon 9800Pro @ XT), but I was surprised I could play the whole game at 1280*960 with High settings and 2X AA and 4X AF without a SINGLE framedrop. Good job, Valve! I finished it yesterday, and I must say that together with MoH:AA, this is the best FPS I've ever played. One thing though. It's VERY much I don't get about the story, and especially the G-Man. Both basic and more advanced things. It's a bit annoying, really.

I got the game over the weekend ($54) and haven't been able to play it yet. The install went so-so; but the online registration was a complete turnoff. According to the instructions (one little card?) I should be able to play the game off line if I chose "remember my password" option on the login screen. I have yet to see the login screen. The game install took about 20 minutes but the online registration took over an hour and a half. I finally have a quick start on my desk top for the game. But a dialog box comes up that says "preparing to play half-life 2" but nothing happens after 30 minutes. Do I have to play online only??? |

About hardware: This game really requires CPU power and large amounts of fast RAM more than it requires a fancy graphics card. For optimal performance, 1GB of (fast) RAM is very good to have. But Steam is really a VERY good engine, just like the old Half-Life engine.

Picture the scene...
Brave Mr Freeman makes it to the rebel stronghold, and is forced to sit in on some kind of briefing. We're here, we want to get here, lots of bad guys, yadda, yadda. Another day in the office.
But - what's this? Yes! The briefing room contains several interestingly-sized boxes! Now this is a challenge. Can Gordon stack them all such that they reach the roof? Can he make an inverted pyramid with the smallest items at the bottom? This may take some time, the mission will have to wait...
After a good ten minutes, the Free Man emerges, triumphant! He has no idea what the future holds, but if a sizeable portion of the enemies he's to meet along the way are cuboid, the world is surely safe!
Wandering non-chalantly back to his transportation, he stops to chat with a local. "Eli was right about you", one stout fellow utters.
"What?" Gordon gasps, mouth agape. "How on earth did Eli find out about my box-stacking fetish?"

My alternative universe version of Gordon (one of my RL nicknames, by the way, because we're obviously sharing the same optician) really liked his buzz-saw blades. So much nonsense you can do with these things. Or with radiators.

That sucks. They sure stick in the floors pretty good.
I finished the game on Sunday morning, and I started a new game and gave myself a shotgun at the trainstation. Sure was satisfying to shoot that Combine soldier in the face when he tells you to pick the can up.
