[quote]My parents and all the old all knowing people think that it is a waste of time. But I don´t, so it is´nt a waste of time for me but maybe for them.

One of the things about getting old is you begin to realise just how lttle you do know.I've been a parent longer than a I've been playing computer games. Don't write us all off.

Waste of time? One persons waste of time is anothers life enhancing experience is anothers fun and relaxation.

Me, I just enjoy them.

To call something a waste of time implies that you could be doing something else that is more beneficial with that same time.

It is a widely known fact that we all need some leisure/entertainment time.

If computer games provide the most efficiant means to gain that leisure/entertainment for 'you' then for you then game is definately not a waste of time but rather the best thing you could be doing with your time.

Keep in mind that we also need to allocate time to other priorities and if the game playing time takes over the time to be used for these things then they definately can be percieved as a waste of time

'A single moment of happiness is not a moment wasted'

-Something i live by I am playing a video game and I am thinking, this is brilliant I am having a great time, I am happy, well that has justified the time I am playing.

This is something a lot of people who are hooked on MMPORGS should do though - in my old EQ days, I met people who played for the sake of playing - they had become so hooked, they no longer had fun but they couldn't think of doing anything else. They should remember, the moment they stop being happy playing it, they should do something else. I think thats the best way to make sure you don't get into the horrible cycyle of addiction.

You also forgot to mention that playing games leaves you with a terminal case of swivel-chair spread.

another viewpoint

I'd like to interject another viewpoint just to mix things up.

Perhaps the problem with these kinds of games is that, unlike most hobbies, this one seems to have no useful side benefits BESIDES fun.

If I watch tv or surf the internet, chances are I will learn something about the world. If I am out with friends I am building social skills and possibly meeting people. If I am rollerblading I am getting exercise which is good for me. If team sports then both of the previous two. If I enjoy playing music I am building a valuable, respected skill.

I love my computer games, but because of this fact I know that I need to minimize their use. They do tend to stimulate my mind in a way that nothing else can though... perhaps there ARE useful benefits that have been overlooked.

One useful benefit about computer games is that you learn how to use a computer: take a look at the troubleshooting forums and you'll see what I mean

Watching tv and surfing the internet may teach you something, but then again, watching Southpark (or any other comedy) is not going to improve your general knowledge; it's just fun!! Sport is good too, but the main difference between computer games and team sport for me is that if at some time you can't find enough people to play a decent game of football, you simply can't play

other than my obsessive watching of the discovery channel, i haven't really learned anything from TV, oh except that women are objects, minorities should be sterotyped and old people should be isolated and studied.

Sarcasm disclaimer:
That was said with scaything sarcasm for those who don't have talking computers (losers)

Aren't games a WASTE OF TIME?

To properly assert the topic here, it should be are RPGs a waste of time?
I do not think that FPS's come into the same category. MMORPGs are in an entirely different class and may be interpreted in many ways.
MMORPGs are a most wonderful genre, that is until you get hooked into 'playing by Excel' which is a term I've noticed recently which seems to very well descibe the majority of MMORPG players at the moment; building a database of ever more critical stats and items.
When I began playing Asheron's call, every day was intently exciting as I uncovered more and more of a massive, mutual virtual, role playing reality. It was wondrous to be a part of a world in it's creation and often gave me interesting insights to our greater reality and it's inception.
Yet this gave way to the 'Excel' gaming after about 6 months and the endless 'harvesting' with patterned communication to a web of fellows who were falling foul of the same predicament. It took another 6 months to come to the conclusion that every minute more was just 'a waste of time' and I opted out, yet the initial experience was so enjoyable and intense that I am sorely in anticipation of the upcoming MMRPGs to give me the same joy that makes a workaday world a much more interesting place.
There's two sides to the coin and with creative imagination and sidestepping the pitfalls of 'Excel-ing' we can get heads up all the time.

p.s. I love good FPS's but I feel they are really just an agressive outlet.

I don't know the story of the ant very well, but I do think the ant is the one that survives! So, it really is better to be an ant -> work all day -> games are bad !!

Airk is right! Let's all get bored!
