Neverwinter Nights or Icewind Dale II? |
|
I have both of these games installed, I got bored with Morrowind, and am not quite ready for Divine Divinity (I have that one installed also). Which of these two games, Neverwinter or Icewind 2, would you play, or which one to you is better. I realize that one has up to six characters and the other starts out with just one; but cut through the layers and they must be just about the same game. So which one is better? Decisions, decisons.
Yikes, I didn't realize this was a dying forum. I guess by the lack of activity in this forum is almost an answer in itself. |

IWD2 and NWN are NOT the same at all... IWD is party-based, NWN is single character, although you can have a hencheman.
As it has often been said in here, NWN really shines in multiplayer, but many good mods can be found in the community sites, which put its value far above that of IWD2, in my opinion. Still, I guess IWD2 has its appeal, I never played it because it really doesn't fall in my type of RPG. _________________ =Proud Father of a new gamer GIRL!=

I would recommend IWD2. True, for multiplayer NWN is a nice choice, but IWD2 is really THE best single-player-linear D&D RPG this year. It is very stylish, it uses quite complicated set of rules - 3rd edition, which works best in multi-character play (as opposed to single-character in NWN), it has funny dialogues, it has some things quite unusual for RPG - big battle on the palisade in the beginning of the game for example. Go for it. NWN can wait. In fact I believe that it is more fun to play NWN AFTER you've learned D&D 3rd edition in IWD2. |

I forgot about the third edition changes in both games. I also forgot to mention that I do not and will not play multi-player anything. I was leaning towards Neverwinter; because Icewind 2 looked about the same as Ice 1; but I think I will try Icewind II strictly because of the third edition D&D, so that I can get acquainted with it. |

NWN single-player campaign is just plain average IMO. Add MP and some excellent user-modules and it's a different matter but if your intent is to play an engrossing SP game, I'd go for IWD2.
I know plenty will disagree, but with the one character (plus a poor AI henchman) I found NWN difficult to play as anything but a hack'n'slash fighter campaign.
As Ekim stated, in the long run the value for money proposition is a different matter all together. |

I could be an ass and point out that I wrote both reviews for RPGDot and ask you to read them....
NWN was the better game overall... but that was largely due to multiplayer and replay value due to user mods (single and multiplay). If you don't want to use multiplayer and you liked IWD and don't mind that IWD2 looks and plays exactly the same (with a new ruleset) then definately get IWD2. The dialogue is funny, the story was surprisingly good for a dungeon hack, and there were a LOT of puzzles. It really wasn't a bad game overall... I just found combat a little ... excessive... at times. _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi

I will echo what Everything Xen said, (echo). The wave of the future, imho, NWN is. (my Joda impersonation). The main reason is player mods. By opening up the guts of the editor you can do some really strange things. You have a large fan base actively working to make the game better with scripts, Hak Paks, variant skins, etc.. There are even companies working to make mods. So in the long run NWN will have more playability. I have seen scripts that allow multiple henchmen, and small army conflicts. Some additions since the game came out:
Working Ballista and Catapults.
The ability to sit in chairs and move, (turn) objects.
A barking dog who will alternately chases chickens.
Day or Night only spawning monsters.
Scripts to make npc's, and the cities they inhabit, come alive.
Ships in storms at sea. (A firend of mine combined this with working ballista
to create a huge sea battle).
Thats just a small smattering of some of the things you can do. Lastly I would point out the possibility of DM'G. A good active DM can really make a game world come alive. I liked IWD, but I think in the long run you will just
get more out of NWN. Some of my experiences in multiplayer have been a real kick, both as a DM, and a player. Also running in mods as a single player is still fun, as you try to figure it out. My group still talks about some of the fights from my old pen and paper campaing, and now here it is all over again. You might remenisce about your sp glorious victories, but in mp you have others to remenisce with. |

My question is kinda similar, so I shall not open up a new thread and instead post it here:
I am not a big fan of RPG games (I am more a TB Strategy fan) even though I've played Bard's Tale (unce upon a time... when most of NWN players were under 6 ), Betrayal at Krondor, Daggerfal, M&M 6,7,8, Wizardry 5&8, Icewind Dale and the Baldur's Gate series (both games, both expansions).
Of those I really loved Betrayal at Krondor, BG and BG2, and M&M6.
I do not get pirated games, so I want to think twice before purchasing NWN. I did buy Morrowind out of the blue and even though it looks and plays awesomely, it could never really drag me into it's world - I had to abandon it midway and it's shelved since then. Some people say those two games have much in common.
So... what would you suggest? Should I get NWN or not? IWD2 I might get (still thinking about it) allthough it's pretty much dungeon crawling and hack'n'slash. but ...NWN? |

If you want a game that you will never, ever, ever, ever finish (If you download the user modules and everything)... then yes, get NWN.
If you just want it for a single run through... wait for the price to drop. The single player is good, but nothing terrifically new or innovative.
Then again, what is, really? _________________ Estuans interius, Ira vehementi
