Maybe someone here can help me get Arx playable on my PC's

I have an AMD 2800+ with a GeForce FX 5600 and a AMD 1333 with a GeForce 4200 TI (both Windows XP and Direct X90.b). Both systems have 1 gig of ram and the latest windows updates installed.
I've installed the game on both systems, and it is not playable.

The first time I tried, I got a black screen in the intro up until the movie started playing, the movie itself wasn't smooth, but jumped ahead by 10 to 20 pixels each time it moved. After the movie I got a black screen again, and heard things going on thru the sound (speech and sound FX).
In game I get a black screen, where I only see the inventory book and icons. Sound was fine. (The main menu was fine tho)

I changed the softfog from 0 to 1 in the ini, and the black screen problems where gone, but the game is insane slow. When I move my mouse in game, 1 to 2 seconds later the view changed.
This of course is not playable at all...

I tried switching settings around, even put the game at it's lowest settings at 640x480x16, but all to no avail, it remains super slow.

GeForce wise, I tried the recommended 30.82 drivers, 45.## and the latest certified drivers (52.16). None make any difference.

I bought this game the day it cam out in the Netherlands, and have since been waiting to play it. By now, I'm losing hope that I'll ever be able to do so. At first (whne it was just released) I didn't wanna uninstall my good video drivers to go back to 30.82 just to be able to play this game (I was playing other games that used the latest drivers), now I regret not doing it back then, since it's totally unplayable now at all
Let's hope someone out there encountered these same symptons and managed to fix them...

I would REALLY like to play this game

Hi,

Could you try different settings of your video cards regarding Anti Alias option?
Could you try to disable it and to launch the game or to set it to 4x and launch the game?
It may fix your problem.

Best,

I've tried:

Anti Aliasing OFF and 4x
both twice with Application Controlled ON and OFF
and both with Ansitropic Filtering ON and OFF

I've also tried the above settings with the softfog setting on 0 and 1. 0 always gives the black screen (like the 3D engine doesn't have any light?)

I'm coding games myself, so if you want to go technical on me, feel free

I solved it!!
I turned on Direct Draw hardware acceleration and now the game works great.
DirectDraw acceleration was off, because some 2D games used to be slideshow with it turned on (bug in NVidia Detonator drivers).

The only problem it has now, is that if I turn on AA, I get no text in game Ah well... no AA for me then! (I tried the let intro play thing, but it didn't work)

woohoo... I can finally play it...

Glad you're up and running. I'm sure you'll enjoy. Be sure to install patch. And welcome to RPGdot by the way.

Thank you, thank you... I've been around a bit, but mostly lurking instead of posting

Do you know if there is a thread somewhere with bugs I should try to avoid in version 1.17? Or is it gamewise quite stable now? (for example the corrupted savegame posts i read about)

I've finally started the game yesterday, after sitting next to my monitor for more then a year... and it looks great with AAx4 and Ansitropic filtering on

Only bugs I know of have been far and few between. Almost all are fixed with the patch. Just watch you don't "loose" the Akbaa Stones and there is a visual distortion in level 8 when smelting that makes it look like the powder is in the furnace, but it is not. Just check furnace when done and you will find it still there if it didn't get done right. My suggestion is plenty of saves. If you get frustrated in the game, download the PDF file in the support section. It is a walkthrough, and has all maps and side quests as well. I used it for the maps and as a backup to make sure I hadn't forgot or missed something as I went along. Have fun and post if you get stuck.
