| Best popcorn movie of 2004? |

Well, now that 2004 is all wrapped up, we'll start hearing about the Oscars, but before a bunch of stuffed shirts tell us what they think the best movies of the year are, I'd like to hear what your favorite popcorn movie was. Now, a popcorn movie isn't what you think the best drama, or comedy or whatever movie is. It's the movie you had the most fun watching. The movie that you'll buy the day it comes out on DVD. The movie that you wouldn't mind watching more than five times. A film that's probably underrated, but you liked it anyway. 
My popcorn movie of the year was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. It's about time we had some golden-age sci-fi pulp magazine-style flicks! I've been missing the fun adventure movie. You can keep your overrated summer action/drama/comedy blockbusters. I'll take some nostalgic fantasy with a big helping of good old fashioned fun. To quote Roger Ebert: "It's like a film that escaped from the imagination directly onto the screen, without having to pass through reality along the way." Darn straight! Besides, I just loved the old-school Lois Lane vs. Clark Kent relationship that Polly Perkins and Joe Sullivan had. If you've ever seen those original Max Fleischer Superman cartoons from the 1940s, then you know what I'm talking about. Pass the popcorn!

For me it has to be Shaun of the Dead. Very British humour (if you saw Spaced and liked it then you'll love this). Also it the first Romantic Zombie Comedy or ROM-ZOM-COM as they called it. A bit gory in places but still a good laugh and was robbed at the british comedy awards when best comedy film went to School of Rock instead of this masterpiece

Wait, Shaun of the Dead lost to School of Rock?! What the-? That's just wrong. Shaun of the Dead was one of the best flicks I saw last year. It was certainly funnier than School of Rock.

Tell me about it - three films up for the award of Best comedy film - Shrek 2, Shaun of the Dead and School of Rock. Then they announced the winner as School of Rock. Poor Simon Pegg I felt so sorry for him - I think if he had lost to Shrek 2 he wouldn't have minded but to loose to a really bad film like SoR even made him stare in disbelief. Thats why I am flying the Shaun of the Dead Flag - least we ever forget this terrible travisty of justice

Hmm… I must admit I haven’t seen many film this year due to a busy schedule and perhaps the fact that it’s getting too expensive if you can’t catch the early screenings. I think Van Helsing, Resident Evil: Apocalypse (this was a free ride), The Last Samurai, I-robot and The Chronicles of Riddick sums it up pretty much. If I should pick my favourite popcorn movie from these I’d have to go for The Chronicles of Riddick. I must admit I didn’t find Pitch Black as good as many did but Riddick certainly did it for me. No doubt there are a lot of stereotypes and bad one-liners but then again Vin Diesel is creditable in roles like these and there are far between SCI-FI movies that don’t go straight to video marked. Perhaps AvP could have been a contender but I never really found the time to go after all the bad press it got and my friends didn’t really encourage me either.

@Kendrik: The judges need to be fired and sent to jail for bad taste if they'll take School of Rock over Shaun of the Dead and Shrek 2.
@stealth: You should give AvP a chance. It's good for a laugh and a big bowl of popcorn.

I don't think I saw a popcorn movie I really liked last year 
I was going to say Pirates Of The Caribbean, til I realised that was the year before. Erm... OK, here are the 2004 films that might qualify and that I liked a bit:
Bourne Supremacy
House o' Flying Daggers
Hellboy
That's it... I also saw I, Robot and really didn't get much out of it, and I can't think of anything else. I really don't know which to go for out of those three, it'd probably be Daggers if the whole film had been as strong as it was in the first half. Are these even popcorn movies? Argh.  I don't know anything any more. |

The only movies I have ever bought are Terminator 2, The Crow, and now the Lord of the Rings... still movies I really enjoyed in 2004.
Spiderman 2.
Followed by Shrek 2.
Followed by Alien vs Predator.
Okay, I can live with that list.

I would have to say that the "Dawn of the Dead" remake was a really good time, and a good film as well. I saw it with my ex-gf and her friend who arent big fans of the originals or really even horror at all, so it scared the hell out of them. It was fun seeing them sorta freaking out at the thing, and I made sure to suddenly grab her knee when I was sure a scary part was coming. Great fun! The whole theatre was into it (besides them), there were lots of hoots and howls and fits of laughter at the wrong times, it was great! I havent laughed that hard in a long time, and like I said, it was a cool movie too.
Popcorn was technically consumed as well, I cannot in any good conscience sit down in a theatre and watch a movie without having some popcorn 
I totally missed the boat on "Sky Captain..", but I really want to check it out, I love retro sci-fi. At the present I'm building a miniature sci-fi 50's style rocket launching station to go with my latest rocket, complete with computer voice countdown and spinning radar dish. As far as "Shawn" goes, I really liked the first 3/4 of the film, but the last 1/4 was a pretty big letdown IMHO. I also saw it alone, and there was no popcorn involved because it was on DVD. The "Exorcist" prequel is a runner-up to "Dawn.." tho, had alot of fun watching that one, and alot of popcorn as well ='.'=

I, Robot. I watched it 3 times in the theater and snagged the DVD the day it came out! I also love this director's other flicks...

I really enjoyed I, Robot as well. If AvP wasn't on my list it would have been (and the AvP was there because I'm completely biased towards the ficton ... I Robot was a better film in SO many ways).

I was pleasently surprised by I, Robot. I wasn't sure if they could pull off a quality flick. I like being surprised.

I couldn't agree more. I just watched "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" and I absolutely loved it. Beautiful sceneries that reminded me of the adventure game Syberia. The action had me thinking of Indiana Jones, and the pulp sci-fi wasn't cheesy at all as one might think. If you haven't seen it yet, do yourself a favor and do it soon.
