It's been a little while since our last indie roundup - well past time for another. Unfortunately, there's not a lot to cover but here goes...

<br><a href="http://ashes.lalista.org/news.php" target="_blank">Ashes: Two Worlds Collide</a> is calling for help with exporting animation frames with 3ds Max 5 or above - head over if you are interested in helping.

<br><a href="http://home.quicknet.nl/qn/prive/lm.broers/download.htm" target="_blank">Hero's Quest</a>, the fantasy game inspired by the HeroQuest boardgames has advanced to v2.08E.
<br>
<br><a href="http://laby.toybox.de/?sprache=1." target="_blank">Lost Labyrinth</a>, the 20-minute graphical roguelink has moved along to v4.013b.
<br>
<br><a href="http://www.ghostwoodgames.com/" target="_blank">Lost Legends</a>, an indie action/RPG has hit v0.1.1.0 and offering major features of new monsters, new journal and various gameplay enhancements and balances.

<br><a href="http://gearhead.roguelikedevelopment.org/" target="_blank">Gearhead 2</a>, the giant mech roguelink has hit v.240 - thanks <a href="http://www.rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12342" target="_blank">RPG Codex</a> where you can also find a list of changes.

I do like the graphical style of Ashes. I hope they can build a decent game around it. So few of these Indie projects ever get to the release stage though (which is entirely understandable, even from my tiny experience with homebrew game development). Good luck chaps! |

Have you guys ever done Battle for Wesnoth (www.wesnoth.org) in an indie roundup? I just downloaded it the other day and it's a really great game any one who is remotely into strategy games with RPG elements should check out. It's completely free too, but extremely worthy of at least being a shareware game (I'd have payed 20-30 bucks for it). |

I think large game companies could find a good 'niche' market by opening small game studios, similar to Spiderweb, to make games for digital download for 15 or 20 dollars. Small studios of just a handfull of good programmers that actually care about the CRPG genre. Make games that maybe don't have the best graphics or slickest production values, but offer great, brainy gameplay.
Simplifying the graphics (but keeping the complex rules) will both cut down on production costs, production time, and that means a game gets to market faster. I know I'd pay for games like this; I don't care about state of the art graphics. Oh, but PLEASE make them with mouse-based drag and drop inventories, paper dolls, nice automapping and autonotes, and other features that made the CRPG's of the 80's and 90's so great. I don't think that's too much to ask. And also, I'll pay an extra $5.00 or so for a nice, bound printed manual that you can mail to me once I've downloaded the game.
Oh well, I guess in sum I'd like to see companies start putting out cheap, low graphics CRPG's that actually have some substance and require a bit of thought to play. I know I'd buy them, and I think it's a sub-market that's not being served by any company other than Spiderweb.
