The above response was mine (I forgot to log in). Sorry for any spelling errors and the loss of a plural ending. I forgot to look through my post before posting.
I would also like to add that I have looked through several definitions of CRPG though mainly in the IGDA forums, and discussions like this tends to resemble the old Diablo discussion. So I'll try not to make my point further. I was originally just pointing out that it's about the experience, not the features, so you should not be so quick to disregard it as an RPG. If anyone understands what I was getting at in my definition, great. Those who really want to misinterpret it, knock yourselves out. I'm sure you won't find it too much of a challenge since I will not spend days filling in every loophole in the definition, especially since being loose is kind of the point. |

What is this discussion about? That seems so strange! RPG?Not RPG???
I suppose that for some people Diablo is an rpg. All right. I suppose that for some people too, Baldur Dark Alliance is an RPG.Great! Heroes of M&M? Fabulous!! Thinking this way, any game IS an RPG: some are action RPG, like Doom, Heroes of M&M, some are adventure RPGs, others are RTS RPGs, or Managment RPG, and so on.
And, guess what, there are even games we can call RPG RPG, like M&M saga, Baldur trilogy, Morrowind, Ultima's, Arx Fatalis...Isn't that great?
But, we are talking about M&M, aren't we? The fact that it is an action RPG, ( maybe it won't have anything to do with that at the end, but for now that's how it has been described, and we can be confident with marketing stuff, can't we? ) is not really important, I mean why not? The problem is not that this king of game exists, the problem is that people who like, or love, M&M would have liked an RPG::RPG game, in the spirit of the sage, using the universe, the rules, the spirit. and not just the name. So,if M&M X was announced at the same time, this thread would have never appeared, but... |

how narrow minded can you guys be ???
historically, there has always been tons of spin offs with this M&M franchises : some great such as the heroes serie, some bad such as legend.
so what ? the guys are doing some kind of a DeusEx/Thief version of MM, I'm personnaly super excited and I think it's going to great.
Then, it's down to the question : is Deus Ex an RPG ? I say yes. and yes, it's not the same as M&M10, but personnally I'm happy with this. |

Thats not the point he was trying to make. It is a M&M game. M&M rpgs have always been party based/leveling up/fighting huge numbers of monsters affairs. Why make it a M&M game if it has nothing to do with the franchise apart from some suit saying "let's make a half-life 2 version of M&M and make bundles of cash".
You should accept the fact that the "old" Might & Magic is dead. Ubi assigned a task force to create a new M&M universe inspired by the old one. This new universe is the foundation for all new games.
Iīve seen both games yesterday.
I donīt think thereīs anything to worry about in Heroes 5. It wasnīt dumbed down, just streamlined to speed things up a bit and avoid idle time. Itīs basically still the same game as before.
Dark Messiah is sort of an updated Deus Ex in the M&M universe. It looks like a shooter, but the source engine actually supports the 3 different gameplay styles the usual 3 careers imply and the RPG-layer on top seems to be more complex than in Deus Ex. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

What's your point???
You like this kind of game, that's great for you! But you can understand that people who liked previous M&M games and role playing games, wait for something else, can't you?
You say that those kind of games are dead? Apparently not enough, because some games - you are waiting for it seems - are made upon their licences. It's just a publisher policy problem, but this is another question
Besides you take the example of DeusEx. Is it called DeusEx of Migh&Magic?? So what are you talking about? |

I think his point is that you should give up being aghast that the Might and Magic series isn't a first-person-party-based-zerg-fest anymore. It is a tragedy that MM9 was a pitiful game that killed the MM franchise for the most part. Conversely, it is glorious that Arkane Studio's was picked by Ubisoft as the developer to resurrect this series, giving us what appears to be Arx 2 with the MM logo on the box.
Look elsewhere for party-based RPG's. For now, MM is not that game anymore. |

I saw the video past week but still was doubting if it could be or not an RPG. Your words comparing it with Deus Ex made me happy. Go Arkane |

You know, if Arkane is alive and well known right now, it's because a few passionate people, who like RPG's and wanted to do something they liked to play years before ( I mean Ultima Underworld, a dead game as you would define it ), decided to make Arx Fatalis, thing that no publisher would have ever taken the risk to make. Arx2 seems to be on the way and IS NOT stuff of M&M or whatsoever, and I'm looking forward to seeing it, if it keeps its roots and spirit. Besides, if Arkane had made any action-RPG instead of Arx, it's probably sure that things never have turned the -excellent- way it turned for them. |
