Or - - - maybe i keep in touch with latest developements, and browse websites to learn of latest hardware info's (even bad info's) - - - - -
Take for instance some poor soul who buy's this Radeon 9800 Pro :-

A developer would have to aware of these events? - - and be up to date of "political" situations (NicoDe, i understand you can't comment "too" much)
but there are thousands of pc owners who havn't a clue (technically) about what
what goes on inside the case, they're the ones who usually lose out.

I included driver issues in the user´s responsibilities. Unfortunately it´s pretty hard to install a windows correctly and keep it clean. Many users don´t know how to do this.

You're a lucky one - you could have bought the latest DVD drive with the newest firmware which could be 'incompatible' with the used version of the copy protection...

This is a full time job - not everybody has the time to follow the hardware/driver news.
(e.g. I don't have the time because hardware isn't part of my current TODOs)

But thats not realy fair since occassionaly there is absolutely nothing a user can do about a bad driver. This is especially true with cheaper PC's that people buy from manufacturers such as HP & eMachines etc where the company pretty much ignores driver updates, even if there are major bugs to be resolved.
Sure you can get hold of the Generic drivers for the system. But in my experience, the Generic drivers only work perfectly with "Off the shelf" versions of the cards.
I have no idea what the PC Manufacturers do to the cards, but they do seem to have issues when using the Generic Drivers for them.
Admittedly, this isnt so much of an issue nowadays, but there are still a good few machines around that are a couple or so years old, that are still technicaly capable of running games such as Gothic, its just that outdated drivers etc hold them back.
Personaly I dont even try to deal with old hardware, once it gets outdated I just get the newest thing. But a lot of people cannot afford to do that, and they shouldnt realy be penalized for it.

I`m sorry you have to return your game. I had to upgrade my memory up to 512 mb, gothic 2 would crash alot with 256Ram. Try using a regular cd-rom if you get the spinning disk of death (it`s looking for Securom protection) I install games with an LG-Rom. see if you can get A cheap G-force 2 or better, with the latest drivers. Gothic 2 plays fine with this card. "at least on my computer" I now have A G-force FX 5700 Ultra 128mb. Now I can tweak my ini. file. This game is the biggest memory pig. I have A Dell Dimention 8200,A G-force Fx (latest drivers),512 RDRam,2 ghz P4, and the game still stutters in the city and in closed-in places. good luck! I hope you get to play this game. It`s one of the best rpgs out there( now if I ever get to play NOTR)

Yeah man. It's terrible that anyone miss this game.
First time I ran (and beat) both Gothics was on a celeron 466@550ish with 512MB SD and a Voodoo 5.
I just put together a new rig about 3 months ago. It's a 3.2C o/c'd to 3.520, Gig Corsair 3200llpro 1:1, 2-3-6-2, Radeon 9800XT - everything completely tweaked. I run Gothic 2 @ 1280x1024, noAA or AF, at 300% view distance with ALL the ini settings maxxed. Khorinis STILL loses just a pinch of framerate near the smithy. It can be a monster on resources. |
