Stealing....need help?

Ok...since Val doesn't know how stealing works can someone else who does tell me? (no offense Val...) I mean are there certain criteria needed to make a sucessful grab? Like do I need to be sneaking? using embrace shadows? how many points of stealing? etc....

heh....actually found out this a fairly useless skill except for doing two quests....the thief guild quest and the plague quest....better just to sneak about and make a grab for things.
