Just started the demo and for the life of me I can't select different items in my inventory, I've got an axe and a sword, I can't select them, I can't equip them, the help file is useless, the controls setup has no option for this, how the heck do I draw the sword, hold the axe, light the torch, eat the berries?! I want to like this game.

It says "Then just equip other weapons with [action key]+[arrow up]. You can equip a sword and a bow at the same time. In battle you can change weapons by pressing the right number."

Tried action + up, nothing, what 'right number'? This game is absolutely counter intuitive, nothing makes sense, walk forward and action to do anything? This should never have been released without a detailed help file on how to work things.

Ok If u don't remap the keys it is so:
Hit tap to be in the inventory.
Now u can move with the cursor keys in the inventory.
To use the torch select it with the cursor keys and than [LMB + cursor up].
To equip a sword, bow, xbow or spell select it with the cursor keys and than [LMB + cursor up].
The sword icon will have a small 1 the range weapons a small 2 and the spells small 4-9.
To leave the inventory hit tab or RMB
Now if u wanna fight hit 1 to use a sword, hit 2 to use a range weapon or 4-9 to use a spell.

Action + UP = ON / EQUIP / PICKUP

Action + DOWN = OFF / UNEQUIP / DROP

Action + LEFT = NEXT SELECTABLE LEFT /LOCKPICK

Action + RIGHT = NEXT SELECTABLE RIGHT / LOCKPICK

Alt+... : jump, climb

inventory (for asdw-controls)
Control+Alt+a/d : move 100 items
Control+Cursor : move 1 item

The interface is very fast (and intuitive ) when you got used to it.

Actually there is a *very* helpful Readme that gets installed in yout Gothic-Demo folder. It is an html formatted document that thoroughly explains keyboard configurations and functions - plus other items of interest.

The Readme suggests choosing the Alternative Keyboard layout. Doing so immediately changed my keyboard configurations from Default to one that I found ideal. I found no need to override the keyboard configuration that arose after I selected the Alternative keyboard layout.

I was also impressed to see that one can scroll to and select menu items by merely *pressing* the left and right mouse buttons, respectively. Surprisingly this eliminated my need to use the cursor, arrow keys, or Enter key within menus. Note also that one can cause your hero to speak during conversational meetings by pressing your mouse button thus bypassing the need to use arrow keys or your Enter key.

Wish I had studied that Readme earlier.

Enjoy
