I don't think so, first of all you need to sneak and go from behind him, and ifyou sucseeded, you'll find arto, scar and raven fighting you, if you got out of them you'll find that guard andd woth the crossbow of war, you are dead, after all, that depends on your armor.
@topic: I think all of these weapons are crap, wait until chapter 3 and get Lee's Axe, that is the best weapon in the game after URiziel and Innos's rage.

Cast sleep on Arto, Scar and Raven, and drink a potion of speed so you can outrun Gomez and the normal guards after taking his key? Might work. |

Maybe the pickpocket it self don't work and as i said take lee's axe and you have the best wepon.

The bard in Gomez's throne room also has a store room key on him. If I'm not mistaken, he leaves the room sometimes, so you might be able to get it from him.
Edit: Nevermind, that key is only to the first room, not the room with the sword.
