In Morrowind, what do soul gems do in the scheme of things? I know they trap a soul, but so what? How do you use one? I've read the Manual (call me stupid) but I can't figure it out. In fact that's why I don't use magic in any of the RPG's I've played - coz it's just too dammed complicated. _________________ There're 3 sorts of people who're good at maths - those that are and those that aren't. |

Soul gems with a sould are used for enchantment.
You can do it yourself or find somebody. _________________ The original RED poster (retired now)

Soul gems are useful for three things: selling, recharging magical items and creating magical items. Selling is pretty obvious (but worth mentioning), but the other two aren't really explained very well.
Magical items have magical properties because they have a soul bound into them - that soul provides the energy to power the effect.
When an item gets low, you can recharge it with a soul gem - pick up the gem, drop on your character, select Recharge, click on the item to recharge. Higher value souls will cause more of a charge increase, but the whole process will depend heavily on your Enchant skill. You'll fail much more often than you succeed unless your skill is rather high.
The other choice available when you drop a gem onto your character is to Create a magical item. You select an item, select the effects, select the activation process (Cast When Used, Cast When Strikes etc), name the item and hit Create. This process will also usually fail unless your Enchant skill is *very* high! However, you can go to an Enchanter who will do the creation for you - Galbedir in the Mages Guild in Balmora will enchant items for you, and she even has a few filled soul gems for sale. Using an enchanter will usually cost a lot of money, but will always succeed. _________________ Charlie Dobbie
