Bizarre bug

Just as I completed the Mountain Wilderness easter egg dungeon I hit a bizarre bug. I think I know what caused it, but first I'll describe how it happened.

I just completed the mountain wilderness dungeon and teleported out via the last mushroom patch after beating Mabdeb (sp?). Before I can move, I immediately see a monster on my radar courtesy of X-ray, and I turn to watch it to see if it's going to come after me. It's some kind of a golem, and it decides to ignore me. But I notice I've lost control of movement - I can scan around to look in any direction, but I can't move forward or back. To top it off, it's like I'm sliding on ice (or the slimy stuff in LMB), where I can't stop moving. For whatever reason, I'm moving very slowly but steadily west. I run into the side of the mountain, and it still doesn't stop - I'm climbing the hill. Tab to show the map works. Finally, I figure the game's crashed for some reason, and I'd better quit out and restart. Normally, escape followed by enter will bring you to the main menu. As soon as I hit enter, the game shut itself down (like the memory mismanagement crash, which has been documented here before) and put me back on the desktop.

Now I think I know what caused this. All of this happened just as the clock on my computer hit 2AM. But this was not just any 2AM - tonight's the night the clock changes back 1 hour, and my windows is set up to automatically change it. Based upon my research from exploring Otter's lifts of doom bug, I know Sir-Tech has stuff running on threads for timing purposes (monster movement, collision detection, and sky movement I documented elsewhere as being done by this method). I think [and I'm pretty confident I'm right] the program got confused because it tried to subtract (current time - last event time) to see if it was time to do something, and wound up unexpectedly with a negative number! Now the teleporter automatically throws you out of the dungeon facing west (you went east to go into the mushrooms, but I think every teleporter in that dungeon is set to reverse your direction upon exit). So it kept processing my last keystroke (up arrow = forward), which would now send me to the west. It can't figure out the timing because of the time change to say the move is complete or that it's time to check the keyboard again. Voila, perpetual motion, like I encountered.

So if there's anyone else playing it tonight, beware!

You just need to move to Indiana- we're too stupid to do daylight savings.

Does Indiana need another lawyer? Be careful what you wish for....

You could move to Arizona too, they don't like that time change silliness either.

But if you're going to move just to avoid daylight savings, Hawaii would probably be the best choice...

But... the 'Lifts of Doom' bug was *my* bug. *Sniff*

There isn't any daylight savings over here, because the Japanese government doesn't want to recognise its existence. Not sure why...

Don't worry, shai_aus- if Bilbo was awake late enough to find out about daylight savings, he probably was a little "off" when he wrote his post. We're not into stealing credit here

Nihonjin desita ka? Nihongo wa zenzen wakarimasen...

Hopefully, I did that right. It's been over a decade since I took a year of Japanese in college. I think it's safe to say your English is WAY better than my Japanese...

Sorry shai_aus. I didn't mean to steal your bug and give it to Otter. (Mabye if you ask Otter nicely he'll give it back.) It's just that Otter & I got into overly technical discussions over it which seem to have lead to a diagnosis and possible cures.

There was a thread around here somewhere last year about stupid/funny things to do in W8, to which i contributed crushing oneself in the bank elevator and the Bridge in LM. So maybe they're right to attribute the thing to me. But i consider your mention of it here to be original with you, and freely abscond and arroint myself from any borrowed thunder.....
(besides, i think i was "Guest" at the time)
