I agree that leveling up/skill developing is not as interesting in AD&D games, but the combat system I found to be really great (at least with Infinity Engine). The range of possible tactics to use in BGII was awesome; reconnaissance, spell defenses, weapon defenses, flanking, holding chokepoints, encircling, ambushes, sequencers, the decision which spells to memorize, spell combos (web + cloudkill is great fun), etc. etc. I never really got tired of combat in BG II, and you usually got to run away if you were getting whooped (though sometimes the monsters chase you from one map screen to the next!). I remember one time when all I wanted was an item that some golems were guarding... What I did was I distracted them with my fast ranger (who had boots of speed), while my rogue went in and stole everything I wanted. The ranger led them away from the party, and we all rendezvoused at the exit point... great fun

It depends if we talk about character development or the actual game .

BG2 is what I prefer, a long immersive game, with a great story and a unique 'epic' feel, from the music to the story. Wizardry 8 just didn't have that. to me it was a shallow 'MUD' type game. I took it back as I just didn't intrigue or inspire me at all.

BG2 is the easy winner in this contest.

I agree that the first several hours of Wizardry 8 were tedious. By the time I got to Arnika I was just done. I uninstalled. I do hear from everyone that it got a lot better, but I just was so bored and frustrated with twenty-minute ANT battles.

Summoner was a very pretty, very pleasant game. I really enjoyed it. The only problem is that, by the second half of the game, you end up repeating locations (and monsters) quite a lot. It's like the designers got tired.

Beyond that, though, it was an excellent game. I particularly liked the "chain" feature, as it actually added some meaning to technique in melee combat.

BG2!

I quite enjoyed Wiz8 for a while but eventually I got tired of the combat. he story didn't develop much either.

Summoner was a real surprise; despite the obvious flaws from being a PS2 port I thoroughly enjoyed it and the story really hooked me. I guess it helped that my expectations weren't too high.

BG2 was outstanding. The party-based combat really does it for me. Thinking through the best plan of attack against a enemy party with some high-level mages is still the best combat I've had in an RPG.

All three are very different games, so the appeal will differ. I liked and enjoyed Summoner and BG, I LOVED Wiz8. Yes, some of the battles were tedious, but the characters made the game. I found it totally addictive once you got into it. Now, what did you think of Anachchronox?

Yes, I am finding Wiz 8 to be very addicting as well, although I am often frustrated at how long the battles take (a recent one took me 30+ minutes!). But my Mage just got Set Portal, so hopefully, we'll at least have a safe one-way trip now

I guess the part of it that's so addicting is indeed the character buildup, in terms of attributes, skills, and spells. That they actually increase in battle is interesting; I'm trying to get my Samurai and Ranger to be decent at magic, and it's amusing to watch them hurl one tiny spell after another to practice in battle

Ahh Anachronox! Now that was a strange beastie. I really quite enjoyed it but it's far from a great.

It was great to take a break from a fantasy or even post-apocalyptic earth and play a true science-fiction RPG. The graphics were awful but the artists made good use of what they had and sometimes managed to inspire me despite the low poly-count.

I'm not a console fan so I found the combat rather lame but I had fun with the wacky characters and setting.

Summoner, overall is pretty good. There aren't too many items so the game won't be too confusing. The summoned creatures look good too. I think Summoner seems easier than most other games though.

Hmm... Two questions

1) Where might I find such a hack?

2) Is the hack stable? My Wiz 8 is already buggy on my computer (random crashes and such), and I don't want to be adding to it!

As for your crashes, I had problems with that, too, particularly in Arnika. Once I went from 128 to 256 RAM, the crashes went bye-bye. Judicious use of the automap will help as well- there's a memory leak that appears to be hooked to the map.

Please don't mention the Wiz8 automap. Loading that, often took longer than most of the battles!!

Hmm... I seem to get along fine with the automap; it loads in 7-8 seconds at most. I'm still hesitant to run an unofficial patch, for I can't even get Wiz 8 to run in DirectX 7 without doing this weird start then stop thing when the program loads up (so I'm stuck with the crappier MMX option)...

BG 2...but as a FR addict my opinion may be jaded.Never tried summoner but found Wiz 8 a tad boring due to extended battles.
